Report: Red Wings and Ducks “In On Alex Edler”

The 2013 NHL Draft is underway, and by all accounts, there should be a fair share of wheeling and dealing before all is said and done. With the Vancouver Canucks not having a draft pick – as of right now, at least – until 24th overall, much of the intrigue for fans is on the trade front.

Of course much of the focus has been on the two goaltenders the team has, with reports of Cory Schneider being "on the table" recently surfacing. However, as the trade rumours have really started to heat up, it has become abundantly clear that their puck-moving defenceman, Alex Edler, may very well be the team’s most desirable asset.

As TSN’s draft telecast began, Darren Dreger let us know that the Detroit Red Wings have been inquiring about the somewhat enigmatic Swede, classifying them as being "in on him". A little bit later, Pierre LeBrun joined in on the discussion, suggesting that the Anaheim Ducks have also been having looking to bolster their blueline.

All of which brings us to Nick Kypreos’ report on the price tag:

For what it’s worth, the Red Wings hold the 18th overall pick 21st overall pick 18th overall pick, while the Ducks are picking 26th. 

Both teams are interesting trade partners, as they each have assets that could satisfy Mike Gillis’ needs. For example, Bobby Ryan could instantly solve the team’s secondary scoring woes, while the Red Wings have ample young talent thanks to some exquisite scouting and talent development. Also for what it’s worth, both of those teams have some serious issues on the back-end, so it makes sense that they’d be after a top pairing defenceman like Edler.
