As first reported by Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli on Wednedsay night, the Vancouver Canucks have made “significant progress” on an Elias Pettersson extension, believed to be for eight years at $12+ million annually.
But before that, the Canucks had “discussions” about Elias Pettersson with the Carolina Hurricanes. Here is what Friedman wrote over at Sportsnet.ca:
“According to multiple sources, the Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes had discussions about Elias Pettersson that advanced to a stage where both the Canucks and the player needed to make serious decisions about where their relationship was headed.
The Canucks ultimately decided in favour of another attempt at extending Pettersson, and he, facing the possibility Vancouver could move him, allowed agents Pat Brisson and JP Barry to resume negotiations. Previously, the talented forward indicated he preferred to wait until after the season.
No extension is complete at this time, but there certainly is momentum in that direction, as Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported Wednesday. Should it be completed, it will allow the Canucks a very clear picture of their future cap situation heading into next week’s trade deadline.”

Friedman reported on Saturday night that the Canucks were beginning to get calls from teams checking in on Pettersson, who was set to become a restricted free agent this offseason, and what the team planned to do with their star centre.
This kickstarted a frenzy of rumours and discussions within the fanbase about what might happen between the Canucks and Pettersson, who the Canucks selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
Pettersson, 25, is on pace to eclipse the 100-point mark for the second straight season, as he currently sits at 29 goals and 46 assists through 61 games played this year. Through 386 regular-season NHL games, all played with the Canucks, Pettersson has tallied 165 goals and 233 assists for 398 career points.
The Canucks have not yet announced a contract for Pettersson.
