REPORT: Canucks had closed-door meeting without Desjardins after Wednesday’s game

Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins made an appearance on TSN 1040 this afternoon, and among many other topics, mentioned that the team felt the need to have a discussion without him following Vancouver’s 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

“No, I don’t,” Desjardins said when asked if he felt the players were emotionally fragile at the moment. “The players had a bit of a meeting after I left the dressing room after the game in Winnipeg, and I think they all know that we’re not a long ways away. We’re close, but close doesn’t get you many points. They know that we have to find a way.”

While closed-door meetings are one of those things that you tend to hear about when a coaches job is on the line, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Desjardins is in any danger. Losing seven of eight games is definitely painful, but at the same time, these type of meetings often occur without reports when players want to consolidate their feedback to the coaching staff. The fact that Willie would be the one to bring this up to the media is a positive sign, if you’re of the belief that he should continue to be the one running the ship.
