It sounds like Bo Horvat and the Vancouver Canucks might have already agreed to a contract extension, pending an announcement from the club next week. If we’re to believe TSN 1040 AM’s Don Taylor and his little birdie, that is.
Speaking on the Donnie and the Moj show, Taylor said “A little birdie has told me that it’ll be early next week” when broaching the topic of Horvat’s next contract. “Horvat will be signed early next week if he hasn’t been signed already. The public announcement will come out early next week.”
What’s most interesting to me is that Taylor felt the need to add that Horvat might already have a new contract, and it’s just the announcement that the Canucks are delaying. When TSN 1040 AM had Canucks President of Hockey Operations, Trevor Linden, on the show just a week ago, it sounded like the negotiations were still ongoing. In fact, Linden said that the Canucks and Horvat were discussing a variety of different options, ranging in the two-to-eight year range. It didn’t sound like anything was imminent, certainly.
Horvat is the last of the Canucks’ group of restricted free agents for this off-season to come to terms on an extension. The number we most often hear as a starting point on any long-term extension seems to hover around the $5-million mark, though it sounds like the Canucks would rather keep his number closer to that of Brandon Sutter’s $4.375-million. Is there a compromise in the midst? Tune in next week to find out!
