It seemed like the writing was on the wall for Alex Burmistrov. With minimal opportunities and clearly dissatisfied quotes, it became evident that Burmistrov was not a favourite of head coach Travis Green’s. According to his agent, Dan Milstein, Burmistrov has retired from the NHL.
It shouldn’t come to a surprise that his time with the Canucks is over. Though many speculated that the organization would attempt to trade him for an asset, that option is clearly unworkable now. It’s slightly shocking, however, that Burmistrov decided to completely call it quits in the NHL. Then again, the 26-year-old and 8th-overall pick couldn’t live up to expectations and struggled to find his niche in the league.
A few weeks ago, Burmistrov voiced his frustrations with the lack of opportunities given by Travis Green. When the Canucks traded for Nic Dowd, it was a sign that his limited role would become even more minuscule.
Burmistrov:“The frustrating thing is you know you can play at this level and every day and every night you walk into the dressing room and you don’t know if you’re playing or not. You kind of want to know you’re playing or be sure to be confident in yourself and feel like you’re part of the team. Then you walk into the dressing room and you’re not playing and you’re thinking: ‘What is it going to be like tomorrow?’ I’m trying to work hard but this is hard.”
