Plays of the Week: October 25th

I know, I know. Most people want to forget this week, and I don’t blame them. Going 0-1-2 is a real kick in the pants, especially when all of the games were, at some point, winnable. Alas, that didn’t stop us from yapping, so let’s take a look back at some of the fine work that the Canucks Army staff laid out over the past seven days.

The Games

October 18th: The Matt Mart-Wow-Ski Show (2-1 Overtime Loss)
“Canucks still sit in second in the Pacific Division, but they’re now tied points-wise with San Jose (thank you, pity point!). They’ve lost two in a row (as have the Arizona Coyotes), but the rest of the division started off the season by diving headlong off a cliff – so with good possession numbers and that nice points buffer that they, Arizona, and San Jose built, things are still fine in Vancouver.” – Cat Silverman

October 22nd: Home Ice Disadvantage (3-2 Loss)
“The Vancouver Canucks don’t truly head on the road until after November 4th, but maybe they should find a way to change that. To be blunt, playing games in Rogers Arena just isn’t helping them, as proven tonight.” – Jeff Veillette

October 24th: Detroit Red Wings? More like, Detroit Road Wins (3-2 Overtime Loss)
“The Canucks are winless at home, four games into a five-game homestand. The next month they’ll visit Rogers Arena a grand total of three times. Things get more difficult before they get easier and the Canucks aren’t doing themselves on their favour.” – JD Burke

From Tortorella to Benning, the Canucks have won big with executive compensation
“Timing is everything when it comes to these sorts of compensatory mechanics, and it sure looks like the Canucks have made out like bandits. In hiring Desjardins and Benning at precisely the right moment, they were able to land highly-regarded replacements for Tortorella and Mike Gillis without digging into their asset pool. And because the Blue Jackets got a bit desperate after an 0-7-0 start, Vancouver got a ‘get out of jail free’ card on at least some of Tortorella’s remaining salary and a second-round pick to boot.” – Thomas Drance
#FreeWeber: The Power Play needs Some Real Change
“If this week has taught us anything, it’s that we Canadians are ready for something different. We’ve tried the older, safer route on the point, and it’s just not getting us anywhere. We need to push the envelope. We need to try something new and exciting, which at the same time reminds us of glory days past. I implore Mr. Desjardins to rejuvenate the power play with the power of Yannick Weber. Canuck fans are ready for #realchange.” – Jeremy Davis
Acquisition Theory: The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance
“There’s a reason role players hit free agency and franchise players less so. Teams prioritize the latter and guard it closely until cost or age do them part. Surrendering a lottery ticket for the former is moving laterally, for the sake of staying afloat.” – JD Burke
4 Causes For Concern Early In The Canucks’ 2015-16 Season
“By erring on the side of caution with the kids up front, Desjardins runs the risk wearing down his veterans as the season progresses, as Tortorella did. On Thursday, Willie might also have cost his club two points when the Canucks failed to “get it done” in the third period.” – Carol Schram
If You’re Surprised by Ben Hutton, then You Haven’t Been Paying Attention
“Ben Hutton has been one of the NCAA’s stand out offensive defencemen for a few years now. With that considered, it’s not as surprising to see him have the breakthrough camp and start to the NHL season that he’s had. This isn’t a coming out party; you just missed the extended opening ceremony.” -Josh Weissbock
