Today marks the one year anniversary of the plane crash that killed the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl roster, including former Canuck Pavol Demitra. Demitra was a very solid second line winger during his tenure with the Canucks, and he saved his best for the international stage. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, he led the tournament in scoring and was a Roberto Luongo glove save away from tying Canada in a semi-final match up. RIP, Pavol.

What should be remembered about Pavol Demitra? He was a good man. He didn’t complain. He used his powers for good. He wanted to win. He won the Lady Byng in 2000. He played the game the right way. He didn’t dive. He didn’t take cheap shots. When his country called, he was there. He played beautifully in the Olympics. He was a top 5 scorer in the KHL. He was a very good player for two very good Vancouver Canucks teams. He loved to play hockey the way we all do.
In non-Shane Doan related news, Manny Malhotra tried his foot at soccer today (I’m here all evening). Malhotra suited up and joined the Whitecaps FC for their Friday practice. Apparently he was pretty good, too. No word on how many defensive zone starts he received on the pitch.
The first annual Raise it for Ryp golf tournament took place last weekend. Kevin Bieksa, Rypien’s closest friend on the team, flew out Rypien’s mom for the event.
Canucks prospect Nicklas Jensen is suiting up for AIK of the Swedish Elite league this season. Jensen is playing an offensive role for the club, and he recently was interviewed for the AIK official site. You can watch that interview here.
Eddie Lack, Kevin Connauton, and Jordan Schroeder took to the streets of Vancouver yesterday on some pretty rad mopeds. Lack hasn’t even played a single regular season game as a Canuck yet, but I can tell he will be a fan favourite in no time. Lack and Connauton then went for dinner at Shane Doan’s favourite Vancouver restaurant, Italian Kitchen. Lack is in the middle, while Connauton is on the left and Schroeder on the right.
