Early Sunday morning Matt Sekeres of TSN 1040 reported that defenceman Tyler Myers would be out of the lineup for game three.
Rick Dhaliwal would add to the report that he expects the Myers injury to keep him out two to three games.
This means that coach Travis Green has a tough decision on his hands.
Green typically uses right handed shot defencemen on their right side and vice versa. The only problem here is that his two right shot options have barely played in NHL games. Brogan Rafferty played in two games during the 2018-19 season while Jalen Chatfield has been around the team this year but is yet to make his NHL debut after three seasons with the Utica Comets in the AHL.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Jordie Benn suit up for the game tonight because Green does loves his veteran players. As much as I would like to see AHL all star Rafferty on Sunday night, it doesn’t make sense here.
Green is going to need a defenceman who kills penalties and can be used in limited 5-on-5 minutes. Unfortunately for Rafferty, he isn’t the move unless Green is willing to use him as the fifth defenceman on the penalty kill.
Chatfield looked good in camp and impressed the coaching staff with his simple defensive game that reminds me of a worse version of Chris Tanev. Chatfield can be physical and will play a greasy defensive game. He knows how to get under the opposition’s skin and he makes a lot of sense to jump into the lineup.
I still believe it will be Benn.
He’s a calming veteran presence who has put up excellent possession numbers when playing on the right side.
Green likely has an angel and devil on his shoulders attempting to guide him in either direction. Will he stick with the angel and go with a right shot defenceman or will the devil guide him in the direction of the veteran player.
We will soon find out.
Puck drop at 7:30.
Who do you think will be the defenceman that Green goes with?
