Like many people in Vancouver, Tyler Myers wasn’t very happy with the officiating in tonight’s game between the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets.
“I thought we played a pretty good hockey game,” Myers said post game. “We lost the special teams battle, that ended up being the biggest difference for us, but for the most part, we played a good game. We’ll look at some of the things we can clean up, but you know, guys, were into it tonight.”
Myers’ first mention of the officiating tonight came when he was asked about Noah Juulsen putting the two third period Jets goals on himself.
“Well, that play would never have happened if they called the penalty on Garly in the corner, so Juuls is fine. He doesn’t need to think about that at all.”
It’s also tough when you’re battling… the first hit of the game is not a penalty and he calls it on me because I’m a bigger guy. You know, it felt like we were battling two teams tonight. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll look to come out on our road trip with a good effort and keep what we have good going here.”
Myers was assessed a two-minute minor for elbowing 6:39 into the game, the first of 10 minor penalties handed out in the game. Here is the penalty Myers is talking about:
Myers scored a goal to tie the game up at 2-2 in the second period and finished the night with 16:58 of TOI. He was named the third star of the game.
There seemed to be an overall lack of consistency with the officiating on Saturday night, despite both teams ending up with four power plays each. And, of course, it’s certainly worth mentioning that the Canucks failed to convert on any of the four power play opportunities they were given, while the Jets converted on two of their four chances with the man advantage.
When asked for his opinion on the officiating, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet was careful with his words post game.
“It’s gonna be like that. I mean, you’re gonna have these games, you know, whether you think you got screwed or not, it doesn’t really matter. You know, these guys are good. It’s a hard game. The last couple of games, we’ve taken a lot of penalties, and then, you know, that’s for people to say if there are penalties or not, I’m not gonna go there. We played hard, just unfortunately they won the special teams battles tonight.
“I just thought there were some hits there… I mean, I’m not going to question… Like, when Myers got the penalty right away, I thought that meant ‘okay, so anybody who gets hit there’… I thought the Lowry… Listen, we can sit here all night and pick and choose. if I was on TNT right now, I’d tell you what I think about the refs, but I’m not. I’m a head coach, and I think the refs do a great job. It’s a hard job. These guys do a hell of a job, it’s tough every night. Especially in these types of games, there’s a lot of action, so you know, they’re human too.”
The Jets won tonight’s game by a final score of 4-2.
