A Vancouver Canucks legend’s offspring is moving his way up the hockey ranks.
On Friday, the Coqutilam Express of the BC Hockey League announced the signing of forward Cole Bieksa, son of former Canuck defenceman Kevin Bieksa, for the 2025-26 season.
Cole has played for his dad for the Fairmont Prep Warriors in Anaheim for the past three seasons. The team moonlights as an AAA program while competing at the high school level around southern California.
This season, across both Under-18 AAA and high school action, Cole has potted 37 goals and 44 points for 81 points with 75 penalty minutes in 76 games. According to Elite Prospects, his 56 points in high school play is a career-high, placing him eighth among California high schoolers.
In his four years with the high school program, Cole has scored 43 goals and 58 assists for 101 points in 94 games.
Fairmont Prep has been a solid breeding ground for young talent over the past few years. Maxwell Silver, a teammate of Cole’s for two seasons, has spent parts of this season in the BCHL with the Cranbrook Bucks and Victoria Grizzlies and is committed to playing for Colgate University (NCAA D-I) at the start of the 2026-27 campaign.
Cole’s time at Fairmont isn’t the only time that he has been able to play for his father. While on the Anaheim Jr. Ducks, Kevin was behind the bench while his son and teammates competed in the prestigious Quebec PeeWee Tournament in 2020.
With Cole Bieksa heading to the BCHL, he will join a laundry list of players who are the sons of former NHLers who have been in the league in recent years. Former Canuck Manny Malhotra’s kid, Caleb Malhotra, is a forward on the Chilliwack Chiefs.
At one point, the Penticton Vees had the sons of Scott Niedermayer (Jackson and Josh Niedermayer), Joe Nieuwendyk (Jackson Nieuwendyk), Tony Amonte (Tristan Amonte), Mike Richter (Beanie and Tom Richter), and Doug Weight (Danny Weight) all donning their sweaters around the same time.
