Conditions on the Philip Larsen Trade

In late February last season, the Canucks made a move, shipping a conditional 5th round pick to the Edmonton Oilers for Philip Larsen. Who, at the time, was plying his trade in the KHL.
The trade was made to add some depth to the Canucks defence, with hopes that Larsen would be able to make an impact on the power-play. When the deal was consummated the organization had no idea if/when Tryamkin was coming over, as he hadn’t signed. Troy Stecher wasn’t property of the Canucks, and there was no possible idea who the Canucks would select in the Entry Draft.
But, I wanted to discuss the conditions of that draft pick and how it applies now.
As we’ve seen this deadline, the conditional pick has become more common as teams try to maximize their return while the other team tries to protect themselves from overpaying. For this deal, Capfriendly has the conditions nicely laid out:
Larsen has 6 points in 22 games with the Canucks so far this season, which is equal to 0.27 PPG. So he is hovering around the pace that is laid out.
However, the Canucks will be playing their 63rd contest of the season tonight against San Jose. So that means, including tonight, they have 20 games remaining in their schedule. If Larsen were to play in every single contest, he would be exactly at 42 games. Which is exactly the minimum for the threshold. He would obviously have to slightly bump his PPG rate up slightly to meet both requirements.
This is very relevant tonight, because it appears that Larsen will be sitting out tonight:
That would mean he is unable to play a minimum of 42 games, and the pick would remain a 5th round pick. If for some reason Larsen does suit up tonight, and given the Canucks recent history it’s possible, then he would need to miss one game by the end of the season.
At this moment, the Canucks have the following picks:
The sixth round pick in 2017 was sent to the New York Rangers along with Nicklas Jensen for Emerson Etem.
In case you were unaware, that conditional pick from San Jose is as follows:
Larsen will be an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of this season.
