Cheers and Jeers – Vol. 6

The Good and the Bad of this past week.

It’s Friday. So we close out the "Week That Was" with our latest volume of Cheers and Jeers.

This week’s entry is EXTRA LARGE, not unlike a certain Canuck-taunting, drunk-boating Winnipeg Jet.

JEERS to Dustin Byfuglien for his arrest for boating while intoxicated in Minnesota AAAAAAAAAAAAAND for also ballooning to a reported 286 pounds! HOLY MOLY! Looks like Big Buff needs to mix in a salad every once in a while. Maybe stop double fisting the rum and cokes, too, eh big guy? But seriously I owe Byfuglien a "thanks" for being the first hockey player since Vladimir Krutov to make me feel proud about my current weight.

CHEERS to Alix Wright for her post chronicling "A Day in the Life of a Canucks Fan". Utter awesomeness. If you haven’t read it, go do it now (well, as soon as you’re done with this post.) If you’ve ready it already, go read it again.

JEERS to the Stanley Cup party organizers in St. John’s, NL, who couldn’t find one decent table to use to display the Stanley Cup for Michael Ryder. Instead, they settled on a tiny, folding table that collapsed while holding the Cup, and causing a dent in hockey’s Holy Grail.

CHEERS to Ryan Kesler for chirping New York Jets’ center Nick Mangold regarding the latter’s new penchant for photobombing. Kesler called out Mangold for taking his bit and not being original. Mangold responded by sailing his wooden ship across the Atlantic at the behest of Odin, then riding a dragon through a network of wondrous caves before pillaging a small settlement of Canucks fans. Seems excessive, but he took the chirping quite seriously.

JEERS to all the Canucks haters on Twitter. The NHL has been running its 30 teams in 30 days series where it poses the question "You know you’re a (team) fan if you…". This Sunday was the Canucks turn. "You know you’re a Canucks fan if you…" AND NOTHING! Come on JERKS! Where was all the vitriol and hatred?! One solitary female Blackhawks fan seemed to be carrying the torch, and it was mostly terrible and not-at-all vicious. LAME.

CHEERS to a new Tumblr called They Slayed The Dragon that is chronicling the Canucks’ 40 Years in 40 Days. Great site, lots of nostalgia and fun facts and well laid out. A wonderful, quick read that you should hit up once a day.

JEERS to pretty much everyone associated with the Game7 riot following the release of the Riot Report. Everyone from the cops to the organizing committee to City Hall is noted and everyone can share the blame. But the biggest JEERS go to the Solicitor General for turning down and denying a request from the Vancouver Police Department for additional funds and resources FIVE DAYS BEFORE the Game 7 riot occurred. A paltry 446 police offered were deployed at the beginning of the day’s festivities. At the height of the troubles, only 928 officers were working. Compare that to the 3000 officers that were deployed during the final day’s festivities of the 2010 Olympics.
