The Good and the Bad of this past week.

It’s Friday. So we close out the "Week That Was" with our latest volume of Cheers and Jeers.

We start with hate for Lu, love for Ryp, and what the hell is up with a 1 PM start ?!

JEERS to the stupid Lu-birds who gave Canucks goaltender the Bronx cheer during Vancouver’s 4-0 loss to the New York Rangers. First of all, while Luongo didn’t play well, he DID NOT warrant any hostility. So that only proves that you are morons who don’t actually understand hockey. Every single goal against the Canucks was caused by either a bad turnover or blown defensive coverage. So Luongo was put in a bad spot on all four goals. The fourth goal?! Dan Hamhuis literally GAVE UP on defending Marian Gaborik. Listen, I’m all for booing bad play. But do it when a player DESERVED it.

CHEERS to the Vancouver Canucks for their touching tribute to Rick Rypien. The video truly captured what Rick was all about, and the scenes with Rick’s family were very moving and respectful. Well done, Canucks. Well done. In case you haven’t see the video, or would like to see it again, here you go.

JEERS to all the calls for "Goal of the Year" for Jamie Benn’s goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets. You have GOT to be kidding. So first, the goal is a comedy of errors. That should automatically disqualify from GotY status. Next, it’s against the woefully inept Columbus Blue Jackets. Benn looks like Meadowlark Lemon playing against the Washington Generals. The Blue Jackets are just STANDING there, waving sticks and feigning interest. A GotY candidate has to be electric, show considerable skill and defy the odds. This Benn goal was just a comedic clusterf**k where Benn happened to score.

CHEERS to the Team 1040’s morning crew. The 6 AM – 10 AM slot on Vancouver’s sports radio station has become a must-listen now for Canucks fans and hockey. Finally, Rintoul has found his groove, Chapman’s always ready for snappy comebacks, Botchford is set to fly off the handle at the drop of a hat and producers Paul Debron and Cam Mitchell are rife with comedy, intentional or not. If you aren’t listening to the morning show, I strongly recommend tuning in between 7-9 am. You get Ray Ferraro in the first hour, then Botch comes in at 8 and starts his rants, which usually involve which large game animal he is intent on beating in a one-on-one fight. If you can’t get to the radio between 7-9am, then go listen to the podcasts.

JEERS to NHL schedule makers and the CBC in cahoots ONCE AGAIN. Tomorrow’s Canucks game is a 1PM local time start? What a load! What hockey fan in this market wants to watch a game at 1 PM? Who wants to go to Rogers Arena in the middle of the afternoon?! Normally, I don’t care about the Toronto focus coming from the CBC. When the Leafs are in town and the Saturday start time is 4 PM , I don’t care. I get it. It’s ratings. And hell, it usually means the Toronto media gets to watch the Leafs get beat down by the Canucks. But BECAUSE the CBC didn’t want to show the Canucks at 7 PM, and instead opted to show Rangers @ Oilers, and because they obviously have a non-compete clause in their broadcasting contract, Sportsnet picks up the game and the Wild and Canucks have to play at 1 PM. Sorry, Canucks fans. Screwed again.

CHEERS to Paul Bissonnette. Every Coyotes home game, Biz Nasty is taking one homeless family to the game and feeding them. Biz has often championed efforts to help the homeless and this is just another example of our favourite Tweeting hockey player doing something good to help.
