CanucksArmy Postgame #40: Can’t Get No Grindin’

Tonight’s game could have been 56 seconds long.
That’s how long it took Adam Henrique to open the scoring. That’s how long the Canucks looked like they were in this game.
Instead, Canucks fans were treated to another 59 minutes of boring, ineffectual hockey and another four goals against. They managed 31 shots, but you could count the scoring chances on one hand. Even Brock Boeser struggled to look dangerous tonight.
Ryan Miller was full value in the Ducks’ win tonight, getting his first shutout against his former team. The Canucks are starting to look like they miss him.

Game Notes

  • Don’t let the fancystats fool you. Tonight was all Ducks. They got out ahead so quickly and by so much that the Canucks’ had a good two thirds of the game to throw everything they had at Ryan Miller, and still only outshot them by four. Looking at the shot attempt chart, the teams were about even except for shot attempts from the point, where the Canucks had 16 to the Ducks’ 3. There will be some talk from the team tonight about how they didn’t play as poorly as the score indicated. That’s been correct in the past. It won’t be this time.
  • Nikolay Goldobin got another good look tonight, skating for 17 and a half minutes, most of them alongside Henrik and Daniel Sedin. He had an ugly giveaway and was otherwise fine. It’s hard to single him out on a night when everyone played poorly, but I get the feeling he will be the first to come out when Sven Baertschi returns.
  • There’s a large body of work the Canucks’ goaltenders have built up, and there’s mounting evidence to suggest both are significantly below average. The team is currently on pace for 76 points, but if one of Nilsson and Markstrom can’t get it together it’s hard to see them eclipsing the 69 they finished with last season.
  • Even though it’s happened a few times now, it’s still a pleasant surprise to see one of our alumni on the broadcast. I would like to see Dmitri Filipovic and Iain MacIntyre as the intermission panel become a regular thing. I’d also like to see Dmitri looking like a character from a heist movie become a regular thing.
  • As if tonight wasn’t already sombre enough, I’m afraid I have more bad news. Tonight marks the end of Grainne Downey’s tenure as the girl behind CA’s twitter account. Her presence will be sorely missed. As far as I’m concerned she is on the Canucks Twitter Mount Rushmore, so make sure to give her a follow if you haven’t already.
