Canucks Trade Rights to Patrick McNally

In a minor move, the Canucks dealt prospect Patrick McNally to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for the 210th pick in 2015. McNally was set to become a free agent if Vancouver was unable or unwilling to sign him to an ELC in the wake of the Harvard cheating scandal.

The Canucks originally drafted McNally 115th overall in 2010 – their first pick of that draft. The offensive defenseman had a strong freshman season at Harvard, before being slowed by injuries and the infamous cheating scandal.

McNally, as a senior, had a bounce back season, leading Harvard in defensive scoring and posting an impressive shot rate.

At 22 though, McNally wasn`t much of a prospect anymore, and if the Canucks had made the determination that they were not going to sign him, getting a pick for an asset you`re going to let go anyways is a prudent move.

This is likely a nothing move for Vancouver, but maybe there`s something there with the second last pick of the draft. After all, stranger things have happened.
