Canucks sign Ryan White to Professional Tryout

You know hockey season is just around the corner when the professional tryouts are being announced. With that, the Canucks decided to join the fray and have invited forward Ryan White to training camp on a PTO
White split last season between the Arizona Coyotes and the Minnesota Wild, where he posted 9 goals and 7 assists in 65 games.
The 29-year-old winger has generally been a 4th liner with some physicality while helping the penalty kill and chipping in offensively.
It’s hard to judge his games in Arizona last year as the Coyotes struggled throughout the majority of the season but he did do well in his 19 regular season games with the Wild following his trade. Posting a CF% of 52.1% in his limited minutes while suffering from a well below league average shooting percentage (4.49%) and his own team save percentage (.876) when he was on the ice. He’s generally had a personal shooting percentage of 10% through his career, which is encouraging for a depth player.

White is an intriguing option for teams looking to add some grit and versatility to the bottom parts of their roster. With that being said, it’s hard to envision where he fits into the Canucks plans. At first glance, it appears the Canucks are fairly full in the forward ranks and will be forced to send some players to the AHL but competition is always a good thing. At this moment, Derek Dorsett is expected to be ready for training camp, but if he isn’t than White is a possibility to replace him in the lineup.
White won’t push the needle for a team but his versatility, physical play, skating abilities and reasonable offensive production make him a decent player to take a look at during training camp.
Given the games in China this pre-season, there will be a chance for some players to get more of a chance than normal. Last season Jack Skille was the same mold and was able to secure a contract. It’s fair to believe that White has the same hopes.
