The Vancouver Canucks have recalled goaltender Spencer Martin from the Abbotsford Canucks under emergency conditions, the club announced Wednesday afternoon.
The move comes after Jaroslav Halak exited Tuesday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators with an apparent hand injury in the first period.
Post game, head coach Bruce Boudreau said it seemed apparent right away that Halak wouldn’t be travelling with the team for their two-game road trip, which starts Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild.
Martin, 26, signed a two-year contract with the Canucks after bursting onto the scene in Abbotsford and showing well through three NHL starts this season.
Although he likely won’t get into any games as long as the Canucks’ playoff hopes are still alive, this could be a good opportunity for the Canucks to get another look at their expected backup goaltender for next season face NHL shots.
With the call up, Arturs Silovs will also be called up from the Trois-Rivieres Lions of the ECHL to the Abbotsford Canucks as they hunt home-ice advantage for the playoffs.
