Goldy is back.
The Canucks have re-signed Russian RFA forward Nikolay Goldobin to a one-year, one-way contract worth $900K.
Goldobin recorded seven goals and 27 points in 63 games last season while averaging 14:59 of ice time. The pending RFA forward was issued a qualifying offer at the end of the year.
Goldobin was originally selected 27th overall by the Sharks in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The Canucks acquired Goldobin from San Jose along with a conditional fourth round draft pick in exchange for Jannik Hansen in February 2017.
Goldobin showed great flashes of potential in his first full year with Vancouver, but the team is likely hoping for more consistency in his second season. He impressed with nine goals and 31 points in 30 games for AHL Utica in 2017-18 before receiving his callup.
GM Jim Benning issued the following quote about the signing in the press release.
“Nikolay is a gifted offensive player who has shown good chemistry with some of our other younger players. He has taken steps to round out his game and we’re excited to see continued improvement from him this season.”
There are alot of bodies on this Canucks roster entering training camp and it will be interesting to see where Goldobin fits in. You can read Goldobin’s revealing Russian language interview (translated) where he talks about his ideal linemates here. Chris Faber’s final plea for Nikolay Goldobin to be on the first line can be found here.
With Goldobin re-signed, the Canucks will shift focus to getting their last remaining RFA, forward Brock Boeser, signed to a new deal.
