The Vancouver Canucks continued to shrink the size of their defensive corps today, placing Taylor Fedun on waivers to initiate the process of assigning him to the Utica Comets.
Fedun didn’t exactly have a stand-out preseason. In three games, he put up zero points and took just one shot on net. Given his half-point-per-game production at both the AHL and NHL levels to date, seeing him not really contribute to the offensive side of the game was rather disappointing.
Fedun averaged approximately sixteen and a half minutes per game, with three of those minutes, on average, being on the powerplay. As far as possession went, Fedun was a 50% CF in his first game, 56% in his second, but just 29% in his third.
Obviously, one bad possession game isn’t why he was cut, and while the team was likely disappointed in his lack of contribution to the scoresheet, that probably didn’t settle it either. At the end of the day, we’re talking about a 27-year-old with eleven career games played in the NHL; the odds of him making the team to begin with were quite slim – especially with Ben Hutton being as lights out as he’s been, catapulting himself to the highest ranked maybe of the bunch.
If he clears, expect Fedun to be a key contributor to theComets; the 34 AHL points he put up with Worcester last year were more than any Utica defenceman other than Bobby Sanguinetti.
Also on waivers today…
ARIZONA: Jordan Szwarz, Derek Smith, Philip Samuelsson
BOSTON: Tommy Cross
COLORADO: Zach Redmond, Marc-Andre Cliche, Patrick Bordeleau
DETROIT: Thomas McCollum
OTTAWA: Mark Fraser
ST LOUIS: Jordan Caron
Every player from yesterday’s group cleared waivers, with the exception of Philadelphia’s Chris Porter, who was claimed by the Minnesota Wild.
