With training camp wrapping up in Whistler, the Canucks have trimmed their roster by ten players:
From the press release, the cuts are as follows:
The following players have been released from their respective tryout contracts and will attend the Utica Comets Training Camp:
  • Ben Betker, Defenceman
  • Tanner MacMaster, Forward
  • Reid Gardiner, Right Wing
  • Vincent Arseneau, Left Wing
  • Brendan Woods, Centre
  • Brandon Anselmini, Defenceman
  • Jaime Sifers, Defenceman
  • Dylan Blujus, Defenceman
The following player has been assigned to the Utica Comets:
  • Michael Carcone, Right Wing
The following player has been released from his tryout contract:
  • Garrett McFadden, Defenceman
Not any surprises with the group as all the players in the first group are signed to AHL contracts and were at Canucks training camp on tryouts. Tanner MacMaster is likely the best of the group and hopes to build off his impressive showing to close out last season.
Michael Carcone is the first player on an NHL contract to be cut and although unfortunate, it isn’t surprising. Carcone is a very versatile player for the Comets but didn’t exactly stand out at training camp or in the scrimmages and thus finds his way to Utica. He will have to hit the ground running this season or he could be quickly passed on the depth chart.
Given the plethora of players signed to AHL contracts, McFadden has been released but could be an option later in the season for the Comets.
The Canucks begin their pre-season tomorrow and will play three games in three nights and it’s safe to assume that we will see another round of cuts later in the week as the organization inches closer towards their opening night roster in a few weeks. At this moment, there are still 49 players left at camp.
