Canucks Development Camp Invitees: Goaltenders

Lastly, we turn our attention to the crease.
We’ve covered the invitees for the forward ranks and back-end, but the Canucks have invited a couple of goaltenders that they are likely looking to take a longer look at.
The Canucks have some serious depth in the crease, but there is no harm in seeing what else is out there – as the goalies that have been invited would be years behind in their development curve relative to Thatcher Demko and Michael Garteig.
So if there was an intriguing net-minder, they could keep tabs on him for the coming years and then move forward from there.
So last but not least, let’s look at the goaltenders that have been invited by the Canucks to this year’s camp:

Ryan Kubic

Bio:
  • Age: 18, 1998-01-07
  • Birthplace: Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada
  • Frame: 5’10”, 174 lbs.
  • Glove Hand: L
  • Team: Vancouver Giants
  • Accomplishments/Awards: N/A

Stats:

Vancouver Giants own Ryan Kubic has been invited to the Canucks development camp. Kubic struggled at times this year, but to some degree, you have to wonder if it in part had to do with the Giants not having a great season. Kubic was thrust into the starting role for the Giants after only seeing 3 WHL games in the previous two seasons. He may see an improvement in his numbers if the Giants can have a better season next year.
The Selkirk native did set the Vancouver Giants franchise record shutout streak where he didn’t allow a goal through three straight contests.
There is some concern about Kubic’s size, as he’s considered small at 5’10”.
Through my own viewings, and I am no goalie expert, Kubic seemed to have trouble keeping the puck under control off his pads. It would cause scrambles, second and third chances that would lead to goals against. Something that will improve as he hones his craft in the WHL, but still a concern.
The 2016 NHL Entry draft was his first year of eligibility for the NHL Entry Draft, thus he will be available to be selected in 2017 or 2018.

Rylan Parenteau

Bio:
  • Age: 19, 1995-11-16
  • Birthplace: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
  • Frame: 6’1″, 190 lbs.
  • Handedness: L
  • Team: Prince Albert Raiders
  • Accomplishments/Awards: WHL (East) Second All-Star Team (15/16), WHL Most Hardworking Player (15/16)

Stats:

There is no denying Parenteau’s work ethic, something that Raiders Director of Player Personnel Ron Gunville focused in during the announcement of Parenteau’s attendance to Canucks camp
Rylan’s truly is one of the hardest working kids the Raiders have had put on the uniform. He has put a lot of work into developing into a top goalie in the WHL. The biggest thing with Rylan is he never takes a practice off. He always competes and it reflects in his game.
The young netminder put up decent numbers for the Raiders, posting the 10th best SV% and 16th best GAA in the WHL. His 3 shutouts had him tied for 9th in the WHL.
Parenteau is within the normal size range for goaltenders, measuring in at 6’1″ and 190 lbs, and saw improvement over his rookie campaign in the WHL in 2014/15. There may be something here, and simply Rylan is just a little behind in his development curve. Due to his later birthday, Parenteau is eligible for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

The Canucks kept tabs on former Kelowna Rockets goalie Jackson Whistle for quite a few years before he suffered an injury and missed most of last season. He is now committed to the University of Alberta, so the door is likely closed on him.
Both Kubic and Parenteau are likely not within the Canucks plans soon — but if they do see some progression, it won’t be surprising to see them at future development or Young Stars tournaments.
