THE INTRO
The Canucks finished October with an 8-3-0-1 record. They scored the seventh-most goals, allowed the fourth-fewest, and had both of their special teams rank inside the top-five; the Canucks had a month. Tonight, they take on the Anaheim Ducks who also have eight wins but do not have the panache that swaggers around the Canucks.
Halloween is over and it’s time for the Canucks to solve the “trick or treat” question: what is this team, actually? At this point, the stats don’t lie and the Canucks are a team that has to be taken seriously but the going hasn’t been tough yet and now Vancouver will face opposition that pushes back.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

Micheal Ferland is in concussion protocol so he’s out. Sven Baertschi has been recalled and could play tonight. Tyler Motte is sidelined with the foot thing which basically means Loui Eriksson and Adam Gaudette will both get in the game tonight. Brandon Sutter would then move over to the wing unless Travis Green decides Gaudette is fine on the wing.
With Baertschi back up, we could see a potential line of Adam Gaudette/Sven Baertschi/Brandon Sutter. Although, Josh Leivo might make sense there too!
I just write these things.
The right thing to do is start Thatcher Demko. Jacob Markstrom once again had himself a game against the Kings but it seems whoever is in net lately holds the fort just fine.

Micheal Del Zotto AND Erik Gudbranson are now on the Ducks which just seems too rich, doesn’t it? We may need only one period to fully realize how good we have it as Canucks fans right now. What’s even more hilarious is that Luca Sbisa was supposed to be on this team as well. What a world!
Ondrej Kase is still out with a UBI. Troy Terry has taken his place. Josh Manson is out 5-10 weeks with an MCL sprain, fun! Hampus Lindholm may play as he’s been out with a UBI.
John Gibson might be the Ducks starter but don’t you want to see Ryan Miller face his old team?

GAME NOTES AND A STAT OR TWO
  • Tonight’s game might be dictated on special teams. Vancouver’s road PK sits at 86.7% and thankfully Anaheim has a home PP of 8.3%. The Canucks have done fairly well on the road with the man-advantage going at a clip of 22.9% but the Ducks have kept the puck out of the net when they’ve gotten in trouble with an 88.2% kill-rate. Both the Canucks and Ducks have two goals while short-handed so don’t be surprised when either team gets antsy while down a man.

Failed to load video.

  • Anaheim has yet to get to a shootout this season while Vancouver is 2-1. The epic 13-round bout in 2008 is unlikely to be matched tonight but the Canucks have unleashed a lot of surprises in the last month so a nightcap of shootouts isn’t exactly a longshot.
  • With all the outrage over Elias Pettersson not scoring enough, Brock Boeser is finding his magic touch again. Boeser has six goals in his last four games, he’s scored in four of his last five, and has eight points in that time. Brock Boeser is back to his scary self even if it is one day after Halloween. As for Pettersson’s “struggles”, remove the first two games of the season and Petey has only been held off the score sheet once since then. EP has 12 points in five games and the goals he HAS scored have been epic. The critics might wanna butt out.
  • What a difference a year makes. Going into tonight’s meeting, Michael Del Zotto (45.26) and Erik Gudbranson (45.06) are ranked 154th and 157th, respectively in CF% out of 181 defensemen who’ve played at least 100 min at 5v5. On the flip side, the Canucks boast two defensemen in the top-20. Tyler Myers (56.61) sits 12th while Quinn Hughes (55.62) sits 17th. Vancouver has turned a complete 180 on a lot of their problems and seeing those problems explode on the other side of the ice is a feeling that there are not enough words to describe.
  • Sven Baertschi has 2G/8A through seven games in the AHL for Utica. He’s firing on all cylinders and the Canucks could use his spark.
  • If the Canucks don’t win tonight, the new Star Wars section of Disneyland is open until midnight. They don’t play the Sharks until tomorrow night… plenty of time.

Seriously, ANOTHER podcast came out? OK, I’ll give it a shot.
MY 94 CENTS
I really don’t know what to think about tonight’s game. The Canucks are scoring just over a goal a game more than the Ducks and yet both teams are neck and neck in goals-against. That being said, Erik Gudbranson and Micheal Del Zotto will be patrolling the blue line for the Ducks and it just feels like there is going to be some epic breakdowns in the Canucks favour.
You know the story.
AND ANOTHER THING…
This worked out ok
