Canucks Army Roundtable: And The Award Goes To…..

With the Canucks wrapping up next weekend, the team awards will be handed out next Saturday when they face-off against the Oilers. It hasn’t been a great year for the Canucks (obviously) but there are still some players that stood out from the pack during the season. Perhaps it’s Ryan Miller, who stood on his head all season to even get them in the conversation for the playoffs throughout the year. Or Bo Horvat, who is likely to become the first Canuck not named Sedin to win the scoring title for the Canucks in over a decade. Regardless, I asked our writers what they think in the roundtable.

Ryan Miller. No one has been through more this year and managed to not die. He has been put into a firestorm that will see no end and unfortunately, there aren’t any goals to help him out or they just might have a slim chance of the playoffs this year. Seriously. I really hope Miller is back next season and they can focus on keeping shots away from him and more towards the other end of the rink.
Miller kept the Canucks from sinking to absolute rock bottom and he doesn’t exactly deserve a ROH spot but maybe like a section named after him.

For me, it’s Ryan Miller. The guy is just peppered with shots night after night and rolled out more often than any goaltender his age reasonably should be, and he just keeps on trucking.

It’s tough. Part of me wants to give it to Bo Horvat, who’s been the team’s most consistent offensive producer. Troy Stecher has really come to play, too. But for me, it has to be Ryan Miller. He has played like an all-star goaltender all season and put up good numbers behind a team that gives up double-digits in high-quality chances on a nearly nightly basis. Honestly, I was one of the biggest critics but he’s been worth every penny of his contract over the past two seasons.

Like the others have said, I think it has to be Ryan Miller, doesn’t it? But for the sake of argument, I would put forth Bo Horvat. Barring a miracle run by Henrik Sedin (or Daniel, I suppose) over the last handful of games, Horvat will become the first non-Sedin since Markus Naslund to lead the Canucks in scoring. That was back in 2006 – over a decade ago. He will also likely be the Canucks only 20 goal-scorer. And while his goal total will likely be the lowest to lead the team in franchise history in a non-lockout season (even Pavel Bure managed 20 goals back in 1995), it is evidence of him becoming the offensive engine for the Canucks. Giving it to Ryan Miller would be nice and deserved, but giving it to Bo Horvat would be a more significant move for the franchise.

Tyler Horsfall

Ryan Miller. He’s playing arguably the best hockey of his entire career and has kept the Canucks in a lot of games that shouldn’t have been close. Without him, the Canucks probably look a lot worse for wear.

Gotta be Ryan Miller. I love Horvat and he’s taken huge strides this year, but Miller has, for the most part, been the reason why we’ve won. He’s rocking a .915 SV% and 2.80 GAA on a team that’s averaging a measly 2.2 goals-for per game. He’s had barely any offensive support and yet he’s still kept the scores relatively close. On an offensively-lacked team and a farthest-from-healthy blue line, Miller has managed to stabilize the mess that could’ve been. Lets be honest, the season would be looking a lot worse than it is now if he weren’t in net. Horvat’s time will come (probably next year??), but Miller’s been the Canucks MVP this season.
