Canucks Army Presents the Hockey Analytics Data Sprint V 0.1

If you’re a fan of combining hockey and data analysis, and that’s a safe assumption if you’ve come to this space, then I have the event for you. In concert with www.Hockey-Graphs.com, Canucks Army will be co-hosting the first Hockey Analytics Data Sprint on Saturday, November 4th, 2017.

The Hockey Analytics Data Sprint is an event for the curious among us to join forces for a day and dissect sets of information, new and old alike, to better our understanding of the game of hockey. If this is something that strikes your fancy, we want to see you there. Mastery of Excel, data visualizations and an understanding of programming will go a long way at this event.

Have I mentioned there are prizes? Because there are definitely some prizes we’ll be handing out. If you’re not lucky enough to leave with a prize, you can take solace in knowing that your work will be open-sourced for all to see after the event.

Where

We’ve been fortunate to have La Casita step up as a co-sponsor and host for the Data Sprint. The restaurant includes a great working space and comes with free WiFi. The in-person Track will take place at La Casita, too.

La Casita is a great Mexican restaurant in Vancouver, B.C.’s Gastown neighbourhood, so food and drink will be available throughout the day. I’d encourage you to get your fill!

Schedule

Saturday, November 4th

1130 am – Teams arrive, rules and introduction
1200 pm – Teams start working
6:00 pm – Teams present
6:45 pm – Winners announced
7:00 pm – Post-event social

Guidelines & Rules

Vancouver Track

All participants will be held to the Hack Code of Conduct (please read) – respect your fellow sprinters and no behaviour that negatively impacts the event will be expected.
No individuals – all participants will be put in teams of approximately 3-5. If you want to work with someone specific let us know during registration otherwise you will be matched by expertise you’ve identified during registration. You will be emailed your teammates names and contact the week prior to the event.
A snapshot of the dataset will be provided 1-2 days before the event so you can prepare before arriving.
Teams are to arrive for 11:30 am. At 12:00 the dataset will be released and teams have 6 hours to complete their sprint. Final submissions can be tools, applications, models, visualization, software, website, excel charts, excel sheets – anything that demonstrate an analysis of the data.
At 6:00 pm teams will have 3 minutes to present their final work – the team with the coolest final product (by judges decision) will win a prize. Your final product must be uploaded to dropbox at the provided link the day of.
Prizes for Vancouver participants are to be determined.
All products will be released open source to the public.

Online Track

Online participants will follow similar rules to the Vancouver Track.
Teams can work as individuals or with a team – based on what individuals wish on registration.
Data will be released at 12:00 pm PST on November 4th, 2017.
Online participants must submit their final product with a (max) 250 word description to the location provided the day of.
For online participants the clock stops at 11:59 pm on November 4th, 2017.
All products will be released open source to the public.
Prizes for online participants are to be determined.

Registration

As this is the first time we are running this event and the size of our venue spaces are limited to 25 participants for the Vancouver track. The cost is $5 a person which will go towards the costs of running the event. Any remaining funds will be donated to the SPCA.
