Canucks Army Preseason Game Thread 3 – Canucks Vs. Oilers

One night ago, the Canucks split their games one apiece in Victoria and Calgary. There were some positives, some negatives, and plenty of Chris Tanev on display. Tonight, Rogers Arena welcomes back its prime tenant, the Canucks, as they host the Edmonton Oilers in yet another preseason tilt.
Will we see an Elias Pettersson v. Connor McDavid matchup sprinkled with a bit of Quinn Hughes or will everyone have to wait for another game before the overload of star power makes their debut this season?
He won’t play tonight but Brock Boeser is officially a Canuck once again. Boeser inked a three-year bridge deal in what will definitely be a “show me” contract. This could end up biting the Canucks in the rear end but if it does, there will be a superstar on the other side of it.
Expect to see spot duty for the goaltenders tonight to ease everyone into these exhibition matches.

WHAT WE WANT TO SEE TONIGHT
  • Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. The mere presence of them together again for 60 minutes is enough reason to get excited. Combine that with the possibility of Connor McDavid playing and this could be the first must-see preseason game in awhile.
  • Jake Virtanen needs to go back-to-back. Not only because seeing Jake succeed is just one positive to take away from last night’s OT win but because he needs to be right there with the opening night guys and Jake is going to be criticized until he’s not. #ShotgunJake was great but it shouldn’t just be a one-off novelty.
  • Kole Lind was buzzing at times against Calgary and I’d love to see him get in again tonight. He’s about to start an important year in his career. He’s had a full season in Utica and a full training camp yet again. Lind is a prospect that would be great to see up even for a quick cup of coffee this season but he’ll need to stand out. He needs to channel what he put together after getting cut from the WJHC Canadian team a few seasons ago. A bothered Kind Lind is an effective Kole Lind.
  • The Canucks didn’t look like they dominated any one area of the game in Victoria last night. They looked to be out-muscled and Calgary didn’t have much to offer. There needs to be some desperation out there, there needs to be an example made out of someone. Speed is great but once the Canucks get into the offensive zone they need to control play as well. Be aggressive… B-E AGGRESSIVE. (I went there).
  • Goals. It’s preseason. Why are the Canucks not the first ones scoring? We don’t need to find out about who the Oilers will have on their 3rd line in Bakersfield when he scores, WHO’S GONNA SCORE IN UTICA!?!?!?!!!!! This isn’t too much to ask, right?

MY 94 CENTS
It was great to see hockey again last night. Tonight, I want to see Micheal Ferland get involved, I want to see the Canucks control the offensive zone a bit more and again, I want to see the PP set up.
Did anyone else notice Chris Tanev a ton last night? He was a big part of the game in Victoria. It’s so easy to forget about him because he isn’t flashy but when everyone else is making mistakes around him, he took the lead and kept things controlled. If Vancouver does end up trading him, that’s worth a lot in the playoffs.
