CANUCKS ARMY POSTGAME: CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

Matthew Henderson

It began with a tribute to one of the best players in our generation, featuring some of hockey’s greats. The Capitals were providing a clinic against the Canucks all night, complete with two Kuznetsov goals and a great performance from Braden Holtby. More after the jump:
As I mentioned before, Alexander Ovechkin got honoured for reaching the 500 goal mark, the 5th-fastest to do so, doing so in 801 NHL games. Many paid tribute to him, including “The Great One.”
He’s always been a legend on twitter, as the CanucksArmy twitter account brought to attention tonight:
But enough about the pregame, let’s dive into the good (or not so good) stuff.

Notes

The first thing that is noticeable early on this game is how exciting the Capitals are, compared to what many people thought they could be. With superstars like Ovechkin, Kuznetsov and Backstrom though, what could you expect?
The 2nd period wasn’t kind to the Vancouver Canucks, and it took its toll on Ryan Miller too after Sven Baertschi got, after Karl Alzer broadened the Caps lead to 2-0.
The Canucks skated into the 2nd intermission down 2 and morale down the tubes, but we got exclusive video of Willie Desjardins in the room trying to rile up his squad:
In actual real life things that happened during the intermission, the aforementioned Evegeny Kuznetsov provided a great answer in his interview with Dan Murphy
As the 3rd period begins Drance points out that it hasn’t been the best of nights for Vancouver’s future:
There wasn’t much to celebrate from a Canucks perspective tonight:

Pierre Lebrun created a stir a few days back when he said the Canucks may be able to fetch quite a price for pending free agent forward Radim “The Dream” Vrbata, and the Canucks masses are making sure they follow up on this especially after he was the lone goal scorer for the Canucks in this game.
But that doesn’t take away from how nice Vrbata’s goal is, but that can probably go back to the Sedin’s passing skills:
Midway through the 3rd, Blake Price of TSN1040 brought up an interesting tidbit to chew on
Believe it or not, the Canucks miss the help of Canucks Fan Favourite Luca Sbisa, and his replacement Alex Biega has proven he deserves a spot in this lineup, even though he has cooled off of late and may indeed be the one yanked from the lineup. Odds are it will be Yannick Weber who gets revolved in and out of the lineup on a regular basis, and Matt Bartkowski has long proven he has a long leash on this roster.
And then, Rhys Jessop formerly of CanucksArmy, decided to ruin the Canucks fans mood even more, despite the fact they were already down 3-0 on the road.
You might be wondering what happened, as the Canucks were down 3-1 going into the final two minutes of the game with the goalie pulled.
Did that answer your question for you?
The Canucks dropped this one to the Caps 3-1, and they now move on to face Mr. Lack and the Hurricanes tomorrow night in Raleigh, where the Canucks will hope to redeem themselves for this disappointing effort tonight.
