Cammalleri Leads Flames Past Canucks

Last night the Canucks had a golden opportunity to position themselves to win a second straight President’s Trophy. With a one goal lead in the third period against the Flames, however, they whiffed. Not that it matters – no one holds a parade for the team that wins the President’s trophy, and perhaps more importantly for the city of Vancouver, they don’t riot if the team falls painfully short either!
Nonetheless, last night’s loss was pretty ugly, especially for Henrik Sedin’s line, who had been dynamite of late. Marc-Andre Gragnani continued to display some iffy defense, Kesler continued to struggle to produce, and Vancouver’s once stellar power-play continued to pack as much punch as a pacifist.
An abbreviated recap, chance data and the statistical three stars after the jump!
– Here are the most important numbers, the Flames out-chanced the Canucks 16-15 overall, 13-10 at even-strength and 4-2 with the score tied. While the Flames handled the Canucks by the chance data, the Canucks generally controlled possession at even-strength, attempting 39 shots to the Flames 31.
– Burrows’ shorty was a beauty, and gives the Canucks 6 on the season:

Statistical Three Stars

  1. Mark Giordano
  2. Matt Stajan (whaaa?)
  3. Cory Sarich

Statistical Three Goats

  1. Henrik Sedin
  2. Alex Edler
  3. Marc-Andre Gragnani

Scoring Chances

A chance is counted any time a team directs a shot cleanly on-net from within home-plate. Shots on goal and misses are counted, but blocked shots are not (unless the player who blocks the shot is “acting like a goaltender”). Generally speaking, we are more generous with the boundaries of home-plate if there is dangerous puck movement immediately preceding the scoring chance, or if the scoring chance is screened. If you want to get a visual handle on home-plate, check this image. A thank you to Vic Ferrari is in order, as his Timeonice.com scripts enabler this entire operation. Yes, there is an app for this.
Last night’s count come from Kent Wilson, and was originally posted at Flamesnation.
