The Calgary Flames have signed Josh Leivo to a one year contract with an AAV of $875,000, the team announced this afternoon.
Leivo was an underrated middle six producer for the Canucks, and his defensive abilities meant he could be trusted to play on all four lines at different times.
Leivo appeared in just 36 games with the Canucks this season, as a hit from Vegas’ Nick Holden  resulted in a fractured kneecap which ended his season.
That’s obviously the main concern and the main reason why the final price tag was so low. Leivo wasn’t the best skater in the first place but still provided a ton of value when he was healthy last season. The question now is if this knee injury will hinder his abilities going forward. If it doesn’t, this contract could be a steal for the Flames.
Leivo joins Chris Tanev, Jacob Markstrom, and Louis Domingue as the fourth former Canuck the Flames scooped up in free agency. The first game between these two teams should be a doozy.
