Brock Boeser nominated for the Calder Trophy

It was announced this morning by the NHL that Canucks forward Brock Boeser has been nominated as a finalist for the Calder Trophy, which is awarded to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL.

The last Canuck to win the trophy was Pavel Bure in 1991-92.

Boeser’s season was cut short due to suffering a small fracture in his spine after colliding with Cal Clutterbuck of the New York Islanders. But that shouldn’t put a damper on the fantastic season the 2015 1st round pick put up.

In 62 games with the Canucks this season, Brock Boeser posted 29 goals and 26 assists and despite missing the last month of the season, ended the year tied with Daniel Sedin for the most points on the team. That goal total was first on the Canucks.

Boeser finished 2nd in goals scored by rookies and 5th in points.

As per Exhibit 5.2(a)(iv) By being named a finalist for the Calder Trophy, Boeser earns a minimum $100,000 schedule B bonus:

That bonus is paid by the league and does not count towards the salary cap.

It’s unlikely that Boeser will win the award due to some of the other nominees seasons but that shouldn’t take away from the excitement generated from his season. Canucks fans hope that he will come back next year and pick up right where he left off.
