Another week, another edition of Blackfish, your weekly Canucks prospect report! Thank you all for your feedback last week. I’ve added players’ ages as well as some requested prospects that I left out. As always, let me know how I can improve these posts!
It was a big week for the Utica Comets as they are now 5-0 to start the season and have outscored their opponents 29-11. Utica’s 5.8 goals per game lead the AHL and the young guns have played a big role.
The NCAA season is also in full swing with 2 prospects making their collegiate debut.

CHL

alt
  • Jett Woo had 1 assist in 2 games of action. His assist can be seen here on Carson Focht’s 5th goal of the season. Woo’s points per game have seen a decline from his stellar draft+1 year but it is still very early. He is playing on the top pair with Egor Zamula who is tied with the team lead in points with 13.
  • The other point leader is Carson Focht who had 2 goals and 1 assist in his 2 games with the Hitmen. He showed off his great release on both his goals.
  • Ethan Keppen had a busy week of action with 1 goal and 3 assists in 3 games. 2 of those apples were secondary.
  • Arturs Silovs allowed 13 goals on 78 shots in 3 games of action and won 1 of those 3 games.

NCAA

alt
  • Will Lockwood got his first goal of the season off a quick shot after a face-off win.
  • Tyler Madden scored 2 goals against Holy Cross. Tyler Madden is the highest-scoring player left from last season and will be relied upon to do the brunt of the scoring for Northeastern.
  • Aidan Mcdonough got his first taste of NCAA action against Holy Cross. He suited up on the top line along with Tyler Madden and recorded 3 shots.
  • Jack Rathbone and Harvard have yet to start league play but they scrimmaged against Dartmouth and Rathbone had 1 goal and 3 assists.
  • Matthew Thiessen had a rough first NCAA game getting pulled after allowing 3 goals on 6 shots.

Russia

alt
  • Vasili Podkolzin played in 2 VHL games this week and had 1 shot while averaging 14:06 TOI. Not the best week for the winger as his ice time declined towards the end of his second game.
  • Nikita Tryamkin was held pointless in 2 KHL games.
  • I’ve added Dmitri Zhukenov, a 2015 4th round draft pick and someone who has moved far down the prospect depth chart after a turbulent 2019 season.

Sweden

alt
  • No updates from Sweden this week as Vancouver’s Swedish prospects did not play a game. Nils Hoglander is still on track to play in Rogle’s game on the 24th.

Czech

alt
  • Karel Plasek scored his first goal of the season. Last year he had 2 goals and 4 assists in 29 Czech Extraliga games.

Finland

  • Petrus Palmu found the score sheet again with a 2 assist effort on the 19th.
  • I am not sure what is happening with Toni Utunen and Tappara as he still has not suited up for a Liiga game. This will be something I will look into more next week.

AHL

alt
  • The Comets have been on an absolute tear having won there 3 games this week by a score of 21-5.
  • Zack MacEwen after going pointless in his first 2 contests put up 2 goals and 4 assists points over the 3 games. He has looked quite good on a line with Francis Perron and Justin Bailey.

  • Francis Perron scored his first goal as a Utica Comet this week and added 2 assists. Both MacEwen and Perron have been given opportunities to kill penalties, MacEwen more frequently.
  • Jonah Gadjovich scored his first of the season tipping a Wacey Hamilton shot. He is currently day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
  • Nikolay Goldobin set the AHL on fire this week. He’s too good for the AHL. Goldobin and Sven Baertschi should be called up once injuries to the big club warrant a promotion. In the meantime, the two are wingers for Lukas Jasek.
  • Jasek has a big opportunity playing with two of the best players in the AHL. Let’s see if he can make the most of it. Jasek is also getting penalty killing time.
  • Kole Lind continues his hot start with another 3 assists and his first goal of the season. Canucks fans should be very happy with Lind’s bounce-back.
  • Brogan Rafferty scored his first professional goal on a nice set-up from Goldobin.
  • Olli Juolevi has looked good so far in a very important year of development for him. Paired with Jalen Chatfield to form the Comets’ top pairing, he has shown why he was a top pick in 2016 with his high-end vision and puck-moving ability while staying calm under pressure. These two assists are money.
  • Michael DiPietro recorded his first 2 professional wins backstopping the Comets with 40 saves on 44 shots.
