As January wraps up, Vasili Podkolzin has started to break out offensively. The 1st round draft choice scored his first career KHL goal and followed it up the next game with his second. It was a quiet week for NCAA prospects but the Swedes and AHLers made some noise. All this and more in this week’s Blackfish report.

CHL

  • Carson Focht scored a power-play goal in 2 games this week.
  • Jett Woo recorded 3 primary points, one at even-strength and two on the power-play. Woo has 12 points in his last 12 games.
  • Ethan Keppen played in 3 games this week and was pointless in 2 of them. On Friday he had a 1 goal, 1 assist game against the Guelph Storm.
  • Arturs Silovs stopped all 19 shots against the Oshawa Generals for his first career OHL shutout.

NCAA

  • No games for Tyler Madden, Aidan McDonough, and Northeastern this week. You can vote for Tyler Madden for the Hobey Baker award here. He is currently 2nd in votes.
  • Will Lockwood was a -2 with 3 shots on goal in Michigan’s lone game against the USNTDP team.
  • Jack Rathbone is still sidelined with an upper-body injury.
  • Jack Malone was a -1 with 1 shot in 2 games this week.
  • Matthew Thiessen did not play this week.

Russia

  • Vasili Podkolzin is finding his place in the KHL. He’s been entrusted with more ice-time since returning from the World Juniors and now has his first 2 career KHL goals. As of writing this article, he has his first career KHL assist as well. His game on the 23rd saw him play a season-high 12:11 in ice-time.

Sweden

  • Nils Hoglander scored his 7th of the year this week. In 3 games this week he had 10:19, 13:30, and 13:50 of ice-time respectively.
  • Arvid Costmar has been red hot since returning to Sweden’s SuperElit league. He tacked on his 18th of the season and another assist today. His 1.62 points-per-game is third in the SuperElit.

Czech

  • Karel Plasek has been one of HC Kometa Brno’s best forwards in terms of controlling shot attempts. He has a 52.78% corsi and 7.54% corsi relative while starting in the offensive zone 58% of the time.

Finland

  • Petrus Palmu had a goal and an assist in 3 games this week. His 28 points have him tied for eighth in U24 scoring.
  • Not much happening for Toni Utunen on Tappara’s bottom pairing as of late.

AHL

  • A new addition to Blackfish, Justin Bailey has stayed scorching hot this week with 2 goals and 3 assists in Utica’s 4 games this week. He’s riding a 7-game point streak where he’s scored 8 goals (2 hat-tricks) and 5 assists.
  • Kole Lind, Olli Juolevi, and Brogan Rafferty had 1 assist each this week.
  • Zack MacEwen was sent back to Utica while Vancouver was on their all-star break to get some game action. He scored a goal against the Binghamton Devils.
  • Lukas Jasek scored. His line with Kole Lind and Justin Bailey has been a boon for Utica.
  • Jonah Gadjovich scored his 10th of the year.
  • Ashton Sautner scored his first goal of the season.
  • Michael DiPietro lost both of his starts this week stopping 48 of 56.
