We return after the holidays for everyone’s favourite Canucks prospect report.
The World Juniors will reach their climatic end this weekend after a Wednesday that saw some great action and upsets. One prospect ended another prospect’s bid to win a medal while the two American prospects have a big test against the Russians tomorrow.
It was a fairly light couple of weeks with the majority of players off for the holidays but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to dis
We’ll break those things down and so much more in this week’s Blackfish: CanucksArmy Prospect Report.
As always, the stat images are from Elite Prospects.

Canada

WHL

alt
  • Jett Woo is still putting up points. In three games over the past seven days, he had two assists. Josh Brook has returned to solidify the top four for the Warriors, but Woo was fantastic with Brook away at the World Juniors.

OHL

alt
  • Matt Brassard does not have 54 points on the season – he was moved to the Niagara IceDogs this week and it appears to be an issue on Elite Prospects. Niagara is one of the teams that has loaded up to make a run of it and acquired Brassard (with Studnicka) prior to the deadline. It will be interesting to see how the Canucks prospect is slotted in and deployed.
  • Mitch Eliot with one goal over the four games this week. Sarnia did sell off a bit, so Eliot will be leaned upon heavily for the remainder of the season.
  • Michael DiPietro will take the 67’s net soon and has a legit chance to get an OHL title and Memorial Cup birth. Ottawa continued to load up after acquiring DiPietro and it should be fun to see what they can do.

United States

USHL

alt
  • Matt Thiessen appeared in one game this past week – giving up five goals on 34 shots.

NCAA

alt
  • Quinn Hughes ended the World Juniors with two assists in seven games en route to winning a Silver Medal for the USA. He heads back to Michigan University.
  • Tyler Madden closed out the World Juniors for the USA with three goals and one assist in seven games. I’ve been asked a few times on Twitter, he is not eligible (same with Hughes) to play at next years’ World Juniors as they will turn 20 in the later parts of 2019.
  • William Lockwood scored one goal this past week for Michigan. He appeared in two games, including an outdoor game.
  • Jack Rathbone played two games for Harvard and was held off the scoresheet but had this nice hit

Europe

Russia

alt
  • Artyom Manukyan’s slump is back – in four games, he failed to register a point. He has been moved down to their fourth line.
  • Nikita Tryamkin was held off the scoresheet.

Finland

alt
  • Petrus Palmu was held off the scoresheet in both games that he appeared in. Kappo Kakko will come back to TPS and it will be interesting to see if they will play together or spread out to balance the scoring.
  • Toni Utunen finished the World Juniors with one goal in seven games with Finland. He walks away with a gold medal. He will likely head back to Tappara and continue being their 6/7 defenceman. He is eligible to play again for Finland next season.

Sweden

alt
  • Kristoffer Gunnarsson registered an assist in Linkopings’ one game this week!

Czech Republic

alt
  • Zhukenov did not play any games this week.

AHL

alt
  • Adam Gaudette and Thatcher Demko have been recalled by the Canucks over the past week.
  • Cliff Watson (D) was signed to a PTO
  • With Demko heading up to Vancouver, Alex Sakellaropoulos was signed to a PTO.
  • Alex Biega remains up with the Canucks.
  • As always Comets Cory has you covered for everything Comets – check them out here.

ECHL

  • At this moment, the Canucks have no prospects in the ECHL.
