Three American Canucks prospects faced off in the Boston Beanpot tournament this week and showed well, Vasili Podkolzin continues to produce with his increased role with SKA, and the Utica Comets had their hands full with two games requiring extra time to get a conclusion. All this and more in this week’s Blackfish report.

CHL

alt
  • Carson Focht was a minus 2 this week and registered 7 shots on goal. He still sits tied with the team lead in goals.
  • Jett Woo was a minus-1 with 4 shots on goal this week. The Hitmen had a low scoring affair this week winning a narrow 2-1 game against the Prince Albert Raiders and then were shutout the following night against the Red Deer Rebels.
  • Ethan Keppen was held out of the Firebirds’ 2 games this week with an undisclosed reason.
  • Arturs Silovs and the Barrie Colts beat Mississauga 5-4 in overtime on Thursday. Silovs was peppered with 45 shots.

NCAA

alt
  • Northeastern faced off against Harvard on Monday in the Beanpot tournament winning 3-1. They will play Boston University in the finals on February 10th.
  • Tyler Madden had 2 primary-assists on the power-play in Northeastern’s 2 games this week.
  • Aidan McDonough was held off the scoresheet this week. His work on the forecheck impressed me in the game against Harvard.
  • Jack Rathbone was pointless in Harvard’s 2 games this week. He had a fantastic end-to-end rush in which he nearly scored the equalizing goal. His fluid-skating was on full display not only on the offensive side of the game but also whilst defending the rush and in transition. His toolset makes him a very intriguing defensive prospect and is deserving of more conversation as one of Vancouver’s top prospects. His Crimson will play Boston College in the third place Beanpot game on Monday.
  • Will Lockwood and the Michigan Wolverines had a barnburner of a series against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Wolverines won 8-4 on Friday and then 5-3 on Saturday. Lockwood registered 1 primary-assist and 3 shots.

  • Arvid Costmar participated in the U-19 5-Nations tournament this week. In 4 games played he had 2 goals and 3 assists (2 primary) which was second on Team Sweden.
