It’s December, which means we are that much closer to one of my favourite times of the year, the World Junior Championship, but first we have the latest edition of the Blackfish to get to. Nils Hoglander is coming into his own in the SHL with increased ice-time, Tyler Madden continues to dominate the NCAA, and Vasili Podkolzin came oh-so-close to scoring his first goal in the KHL.

CHL

alt
  • Carson Focht scored in back-to-back games this week and had a total of 6 shots.
  • Jett Woo had 1 assist this week in 2 games.
  • Arturs Silovs had a strong game against the Hamilton Bulldogs stopping 32 of 35 shots for the victory.

NCAA

alt
  • Will Lockwood scored a power-play goal on a redirect in front of the net for his 4th of the season. His Wolverines are in the midst of a rebuild having lost Josh Norris and Quinn Hughes and sport a 0-6-1 record for B1G Conference play. Michigan’s leading scorer is freshman John Beecher with 8 points and right behind him is fellow freshman and USNTDP alumn Cam York. While Lockwood’s numbers are disappointing for a college senior, his value to his team has never been his offence. He has the skill to make flashy dekes but his high-end speed lends itself to playing an in-your-face forechecking game. He did look dangerous in this play:
  • Tyler Madden had another goal and 2 assists this week for Northeastern. His 22 points rank 3rd in the entire NCAA.
  • Aidan McDonough had a secondary assist on Madden’s power-play goal. 7 of his 10 points have come from the power-play.
  • Jack Rathbone had a primary power-play assist in a 4-2 loss against Boston College.

Russia

alt
  • Vasili Podkolzin played in 2 KHL games this week without registering a point. He had 2 shots and played 10:10 and 9:17 respectively.

Sweden

alt

  • Nils Hoglander is riding a 4-game point streak with 3 goals and 1 assist and tacked on 4 shots. In this stretch, he is averaging 16:01 of ice time, up from his 13:41 season average.

Czech

alt
  • Karel Plasek was loaned to the Czech 2nd league.

Finland

alt
  • Petrus Palmu has cooled off, scoring a single goal this week. He is 3rd in the Liiga in points-per-game.
  • Toni Utunen had a secondary assist this week as well.

AHL

alt
  • The Canucks have been tight-lipped on the Olli Juolevi front out of respect for his privacy. Earlier in the week, Rick Dhaliwal reported that Juolev’s agent was still waiting to hear an update on his client’s injury. On Friday, Ben Birnell reported that OJ was seen walking out of the Comets locker room after Wednesday’s game. Trent Cull is still waiting on updates as well. It sounds like news is coming soon, hopefully sometime next week.
  • Kole Lind had a big game against the Toronto Marlies yesterday with a goal and an assist.
  • Brogan Rafferty is 3rd on the Comets in shots on goal albeit, he has played in the maximum amount of games. His 14 points not only leads the Comets’ blueline but also the AHL in rookie scoring for defencemen. He had a 2 assist effort against the Marlies yesterday.
  • Michael DiPietro is quietly having a very impressive rookie season in the AHL. His .923 save % is now 1st for AHL rookies and 8th overall.
