All of a Sudden, the Canucks Have Options

So what do the Canucks do?

Suddenly, the player market has opened up and some really, REALLY good players are available.

Vincent Lecavalier, Dany Heatley and Jay Bouwmeester head up a really good class of players available through either trade or free agency.
So… what do the Canucks do?

There seems to be no conceivable way that the Canucks could sign the Sedins, Luongo and one of these players at the same time. Salary cap and salary demands are just too high on this group of players to allow for all of them to be wearing Canuck Blue this coming season.

It seems to be a growing trend to suggest trading Luongo to get one of these assets. I’m still in the camp that wants to keep Bobby Lou here as long as possible. However, I do understand the argument for trading Luongo while the Canucks hold his value. I just don’t agree with it. Maybe it’s because we have never, EVER had a goalie of his calibre in Vancouver before, so it’s just silly to me to suggest trading him.

So if the choice was three out of six of these players, which would you take? Mathematically, that seems to be how it would boil down.
H. Sedin, D. Sedin, Luongo, Lecavalier, Heatley, Bouwmeester.

Who ya got?

I would still take Sedins and Luongo, only because I think it makes the most economical sense. I think you can get those three players as the least expensive combination and still have room to sign additional talent.
I’m not saying that as a homer. I don’t unconditionally love the Sedins and Luongo.

I’m thinking purely pragmatically.

Who can the Canucks sign for cheaper than other players?

The Sedins have already admitted that they would take a “home-town” discount, and Luongo has already achieved more in his short time in Vancouver than he had anywhere else.

Don’t get me wrong – I would sign Vinny or Dany or Jay in a heartbeat I didn’t have assets in tow and presumedly ready to sign for a slight discount.
But I think the best value for the Canucks lies in the Sedins and Luongo. The Canucks best hand sits with those three, if they can sign/extend them for the right deal.

If they can’t sign/extend them at an economical rate, they need to cut and run quickly and sign at least three players this season who drastically improve their lineup.

Am I suggesting that they trade Luongo?
