After struggling to find work on this side of the pond, a former Vancouver Canuck appears to be heading overseas to continue his professional hockey career.
On today’s episode of Daily Faceoff Insider, David Pagnotta and Jeff Marek interviewed NHL player agent Dan Milstein, who had an update on his client, Evander Kane:
“We had a couple of things here in North America, but in the end, Evander decided to take his talents to Russia. We’re very close to signing a deal with a KHL team. Over the next couple of days or so. We will make an announcement, but he will be playing this season in Russia at the KHL level.”
The Canucks acquired Kane before the 2025 NHL Draft, sending a fourth-round pick in that draft (117th overall, David Lewandowski) to the Edmonton Oilers. The homecoming for the Vancouver, BC native did not go according to plan.
In 71 games, Kane scored 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points, logging 92 penalty minutes while averaging 16:25 minutes of ice time. Despite receiving top-line deployment, playing most of his 5v5 minutes with leading scorer Elias Pettersson (440), Kane finished sixth in team scoring and had a minus-20 rating.
As the Canucks continued to lose last season, the organization gave Milstein permission to help facilitate a trade. The troubles continued in finding Kane a new home, and he remained with the team past the NHL trade deadline.
Kane wound up playing – and scoring in – his 1,000th career NHL game in his hometown jersey on the road against the Vegas Golden Knights. He did not play in the final two games of that road trip, but returned to the lineup less than a week later for the next Canucks home game, and the team honoured him with the silver stick for reaching the 1,000-game milestone.
That was the last game Kane would play in a Canucks uniform. Six months later, the 35-year-old looks set to continue his hockey career in Russia.
