Abbotsford Canucks recall Aku Koskenvuo and Nick Poisson from ECHL Kalamazoo

The player carousel continues within the Vancouver Canucks organization.
On Saturday, the Abbotsford Canucks announced the recall of goaltender Aku Koskenvuo and forward Nick Poisson from the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings.
The moves come after a flurry of transactions on Friday and yet another injury setback later that evening. On Friday, Vancouver recalled Jiri Patera from Abbotsford to serve in the place of Thatcher Demko, who was given a maintenance weekend during the team’s back-to-back home set.
That decision left Abbotsford thin in goal as they travelled to Loveland, Colorado, to face the AHL’s top-ranked Colorado Eagles. Ty Young was forced to carry the crease solo, with the club recalling Jonathan Lemieux earlier that day — though not in time for him to dress.
After an 18-save performance through two periods, Young was held out of the game, forcing Abbotsford to turn to a local emergency backup goaltender. C.J. Kier, a 21-year-old insurance representative from Denver, answered the call and finished the game, stopping five shots in relief.
Young’s status remains unclear, but the recall of Koskenvuo suggests he may not be ready to play in Saturday’s rematch.
For Koskenvuo, the timing couldn’t be better. The Finnish netminder is coming off his first professional victory on Friday night, a 35-save effort for the Kalamazoo Wings.
Drafted by Vancouver in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft (5th round, 137th overall), Koskenvuo spent the past three seasons with Harvard University, where he posted a career record of 14–16–5 with a .905 save percentage and 2.91 goals-against average. He signed his entry-level contract with the Canucks this summer and began the season in Abbotsford before being loaned to Kalamazoo in early November.
Nick Poisson was also recalled in the same transaction. He earns his first recall to Abbotsford after six games in the ECHL, where he tallied one assist.
The 24-year-old Vancouver native spent five seasons at Providence College, serving as captain in his final year. Across 170 NCAA games, he recorded 109 points (42 goals, 67 assists), 94 penalty minutes, and a plus-29 rating.
Poisson first joined the organization as an invitee at the Canucks’ 2025 Prospect Showcase in Washington State, where his performance earned him an invitation to Abbotsford’s main training camp. He signed shortly after and began his professional career in Kalamazoo.
Abbotsford remains in Colorado for the back half of their two-game set against the Eagles and will have some decisions on who to start between the pipes. It is unclear if Koskenvuo will arrive in time to earn the start.
