A few months after being traded to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Linus Karlsson, former top prospect Jonathan Dahlén is heading back to Sweden.
The 21-year-old Dahlén, who was originally acquired from the Ottawa Senators in the Alex Burrows trade, struggled to find his footing in North America. After being selected 42nd overall in the 2016 draft by the Sens, Dahlén put up 44 points in 45 games in the SHL. He played his 2017-18 season in the SHL again before coming over to North America for the 2018-19 season. Dahlén would score just 29 points in 50 games for the Utica Comets.
The Canucks moved on from Dahlén at this year’s trade deadline, sending him to San Jose in the aforementioned swap that netted them Linus Karlsson. While Dahlén appeared to have major upside when he was acquired by the Canucks a couple of years ago, things didn’t work out, so it was good work by Jim Benning to manage to swap him for another younger prospect before he ultimately returned to play in Sweden.
The 44 points in 45 games were in the 2nd tier, not the SHL.
Allvenskan – he’s going back to Timra not SHL.
Dahlen helped get Timra into the SHL, thus, if he is going back to Timra, he would be playing in the SHL this upcoming season….

The trade last spring appears to have been the correct one. Nevertheless, still wish him nothing but the best, and that he finds his way back to the NHL is that is his goal.
Dahlen gives us a clue about what Pettersson needs from his left winger although I have not seen enough of Dahlen to know what his strengths are as a winger but whatever game he brought to help Pettersson is what will help Pettersson be successful. Boeser fits in nicely but the right left winger could make the Pettersson line one of the best in the league and I would not discount Dahlen as a future Canuck several years from now.
You’re kidding, right? He’s never coming back to North America, the game here is obviously too rough for him. He’s going back to play 2nd division hockey in Sweden, where to paraphrase the late Harold Ballard, “Dahlen could go into the corner with a dozen eggs in his pocket and not break any of them.”
Inge Hammerstrom could skate like the wind and balance an egg on his head doing it. Harold Ballard? Isn`t he still in jail and bunking with his cellmate; Conrad Black? As for Dahlen; He`s definitely over the hill. What is he – 52-53? Oh wait; That`s his father. Maybe the best comparable is Anton Rodin who came over, went home and came over again and made his NHL debut aged 25. I also think Pettersson will ask that he be given a second chance right after Trent Cull loses his job as Canucks head coach mainly because in a couple of years from now anything Pettersson wants Pettersson gets a bit like Gretzky will only go to LA if McSorley goes with him. Pettersson and Dahlen; the twins deja vu all over again.
Just kidding of course…just hanging around waiting to see if the Lions have sent their A team or their B team.

Didn’t I read (and mention how stupid it was to say) repeatedly Vancouver unequivocally, no-doubt, absolutely lost this trade.
I think we can safely say, now that Shinkaruk part II has started playing out further, anyone who thinks they can tell you who won a trade of prospects before either has played significant NHL minutes, is an idiot.
I completely forgot about Linus Karlsson. Does he have a shot at being better than a replacement level player?
There were hints that Dahlen wasn’t comfortable in North America in his first season in Utica. Despite playing only a few games, he found the experience emotionally devastating, and the Canucks staff had to take special care up to get his career back on track.
Maybe just too much going on in that head of his. The race doesn’t always go to the talented, but to the persistent and emotionally resilient.
