Canucks Army Game Day 53 – Canucks @ Flyers (It’s Not About Gritty Edition)

THE INTRO

There’s a lot on the line tonight: the Flyers are looking to make it eight straight wins while the Canucks are hoping to continue their push for the playoffs by following up an impressive 5-1 victory against the Avalanche on Saturday night. No more goofing around for Vancouver, they need all-out efforts from everyone in the lineup which includes their coach getting the most out of the guys that have struggled.

What we do know is the Canucks have made it appointment viewing on most nights and against a red-hot Flyers club, they’ll have to get it going early to have a chance at victory.

Nolan Patrick got his first OT GWG on Saturday and he’ll get to go head to head with another Top-5 pick, Pettersson, who may get compared by draft position as the years go on. Tonight, it’s a smorgasbord of talent in Philly which the Canucks will have to respect.

Carter Hart took the WHL, CHL and eventually the World Juniors by storm. He has made the most out of his call-up with Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth both getting clipped by injury. He’s the real deal and the Canucks will have a tough time beating him tonight.

YOUR INFORMATIONAL NEEDS FOR TONIGHT’S GAME

  • After an excruciating four-game punishment for Goldobin and his supporters, he bounced back in a big way with a power play goal and a creative offensive output. Tonight won’t be a cake walk but Goldobin knows he has to bring it at both ends of the rink if he wants to stick it with the Canucks. He’s in sole possession of fourth place on the team in points and only a goal behind dynamo Tyler Motte. Big things from Goldy to come?
  • Brock Boeser notched one of his signature goals last game which put him at six points in his last five games. There were a few sequences with Elias Pettersson and Goldobin against the Avalanche that didn’t result in goals but wow factor was definitely pushed to the limit. Boeser scored three goals against the Flyers last year and had a massive blue line laser beam along with an assist against Philly back in December as the Canucks crushed the Flyers 5-1. Brock sure enjoys playing against the battery boys.
  • Gritty has never met the Canucks and this is a travesty. He’s met Pettersson, though, and I would assume they’re best buds now, see below:

  • Providing Markstrom gets the start tonight, he will be looking for his fourth win in six games. Markstrom has allowed one goal twice, two goals twice and of course, it can’t be forgotten he was embarrassed for five goals against Carolina, in his latest run. He’s playing his best hockey right now and combine that with a defense that hasn’t been overly amazing, the Canucks have another thing going their way that wasn’t in their favor to start the year.
  • Loui Eriksson has been the whipping boy for some time now but he’s putting himself in position to get points when no one is watching. His failed breakaway last game was frustrating but he’s doing the (please no, don’t say it, just don’t… DON’T) little things that have allowed him to be a better matchup lower in the lineup while the time he spent moonlighting as a top-six winger didn’t seem to fit his style. What if we took away the contract, are we mad at him anymore?

MY 94 CENTS

Coming into the barn of a team that is looking to win eight straight is a challenge in and of itself but then you look at who the Canucks have to do that against and it makes you think if it’s not over after the first. Tonight feels like it needs to be a Pettersson game but Bo Horvat thrives in these types of games as well.

I have a feeling special teams will decide it one way or another. It would be nice to see a Canucks PP that isn’t as boring as Super Bowl LIII.

Gotta lose to win, or something along those lines.
