Former Canucks Assistant GM Laurence Gilman Hired by TSN 1040

When Laurence Gilman’s contract expired earlier in the off-season, he became free to pursue any opportunities that interested him. It’s been a popular opinion that Gilman is due for a job back in NHL front offices, at least amongst Canucks fans. All discussions can now be laid to rest as Karin Larsen with CBC reported that the former Assistant General Manager has been hired by TSN 1040.

According to Rob Williams over at Daily Hive, Gilman will be acting as an NHL insider/analyst for 1040. He will be joining Matt Sekeres and Blake Price on Wednesdays for the afternoon drive.

The decision to bring Gilman on board is just one of the many made by TSN 1040 in response to its new competition. The confirmed lineups of each station are as follows:

TSN 1040

  • 5:30-9:00 AM: Bro Jake Show (Jake Edwards and Dave Pratt)
  • 9:00 AM-12:00 PM: Halford and Brough (Mike Halford and Jason Brough)
  • 12:00 PM-3:00 PM: Donnie and The Moj (Don Taylor and Bob Marjanovich)
  • 3:00 PM-7:00 PM: Sekeres and Price (Matt Sekeres and Blake Price)

Sportsnet 650

  • 6:00 AM-10:00 AM: Steve Darling, James Cybulski, and Mira Laurence
  • Afternoon drive (time unconfirmed): Scott Rintoul and Andrew Walker
  • Canucks games: Brendan Batchelor and Corey Hirsch

Interesting move for Gilman. He sure gets good press. Is he a potential GM – like in Vancouver?

I`m a Donnie and Moj fan but these other personalities are really weak. Pratt should try working for a living. Steve Darling – really? Bell Media and Rogers – who`s worse? What happens to Shorty and Garrett?

Steve Darling is really the unknown, with the news having an opinion is not really required – seeing him with a strong opinion either way will be interesting to say the least. I think Batch will be great pbp guy. Hirsch???

  • Bud the Dud

Great move by the astute cap-ologist to bide his time in the media. He would be an excellent candidate for GM or assistant once the Benning clown show gets canned at the end of this coming season.

Good shout, his outstanding cap and contract work during our best years was sheer genius and kept the core together at a great price. Hope Larry gets a fresh go with us before another team comes in for his services, only a matter of time now he’s off the payroll.

  • Short but sweet. Lots of changes on the sports talk radio scene, but more choices means better.
It’s presidents week on TSN 1040 this week. Trevor Linden speaks on Thursday.

Also, Flames nation listed their top 20 prospects. Hunter Shinkaruk came in at 13. Good article on Hunter, he has to get it done this year or his time in Calgary is done.

Is Canucks Army still the go to site for anything Canucks?

That Gillis stink must be awfully putrid for a guy of his credentials not even getting a sniff for an NHL team, or a tv. (think Seinfeld and BO car) Now he gets to be told how the NHL works from Dave Pratt. Yowzers.

What concerns me for Sportsnet 650 is what programming they do outside of daylight hours. The last thing I want to hear is more US syndicated sports programming talking about NBA ad nauseam like we get from TSN 1040, sometimes starting at 6:00 P.M. We have enough US stuff already. I want to hear Canadian sports stories.
