oh and I thought this was the WINTER Olympics… why are the Russians diving?
Just to screw Canada out of more medals they want but can't get.
I was going to go to that game but couldn't make it – how was eberle?
Good game overall, for Red Deer.
Eberle had a few good moments, but for the most part was invisible. To me its alot like watching Iginla play. If Eberle had some better more consistant teammates he'd be better.
His average play could have been a number of things, but I think most of it has to do with the fact that he was going against Petrovic on defence all night. He's a beast.
Im slightly worried that Eberle isnt the game breaker that everyone's hoping he will be. Based on what I saw at the game, he looks like someone who's better with better players around him. I havent watched him enough through the season to make an educated opinion on that though.
Bottom line: I went in expecting more from him, but you could tell he's much better than most players on the ice.
He really was invisable, he looked like an opportunisty scorer that didn't (couldn't?) make his own opportunities. Which like you said may indicate he needs strong line-mates to be productive.
Unfortunatly he didn't do much.
His skill as a puok handler and shooter were evident in the game. He creates offense and can turn on a dime with the puck on his stick. He goes to the net and you can clearly see how he is able to score goals. You could see by the type of shots he was taking that his has great hockey sense. There was one shot in particular when he had the puck on down low on the PP and the goaltender was crouched down low protecting the post. There was a small opening up over his shoulder and Eberle took the shot. It's the type of shot that is pretty much a guaranteed goal if he hits the spot because the goaltender was in a position that he would not be able to react to the shot. On this occasion he missed but I'm willing to bet quite often he doesn't.
He kills penalties and is on the PP. He goes to the net, works the corner and behind the net to generate chances. He was clearly more skilled than anyone on the ice although Nugent-Hopkins and Landon Ferraro looked pretty good too.
I don't what these other guys on here were watching but Eberle looked pretty good to me. I guess unless he's actually pumping in 2 pts every night other people believe he doesn't do much….
After proof reading I corrected my errors, my bad:

He kills penalties and quite often got his stick in the passing lanes and broke up opportunities by Red Deer on the PP. He goes to the net, works the corner and behind the net to generate chances. Based on past performances and what he's done in the world jr's, that game for him wasn't good. Yeah you're right he was doing alot of little things right, but he can do more. We expect him to do more.
I thought Ferraro and Nugent-Hopkins were quite dominating. I love the speed of NH. He's going to be a great player if he can get a little bigger. 😉
He (Eberle) showed his skill, he showed that he can play a solid two way game..he showed his hockey sense is above average.
The part that scares me is people now wanting and expecting actual scoring results everytime, every game…The guy has averaged close to 2 pts a game this year on a bad team. He isn't going to score 2 pts every night. We aren't expecting this are we? I sure hope we aren't.
The kid shows his skill level and his ability to think the game at a high level everytime he plays.
Ya, again it was only one game. But he looked alot more like a complementary "opportunistic scorer" rather then a creator.
Kinda like Joff Lupul?
Hmmm, probably a decent skill set comparison. I like to think Eberle has more drive though.
I'd agree with that (Eberle has more drive though.). I wasn't necessarily saying he'd be Joff Lupul, but comparing skill sets. I wonder where Joffrey would be if he never left Anaheim? Probably pretty well off.
Ya, the more I think about the Lupul comparison, the closer I think they will be. Looking at Lupuls #'s they also seem pretty reasonable for Eberle, though the extra "drive" will (hopefully) keep him from having an "abbreviation" season like Lupul did in Edmonton.
I don't think I would compare him to Lupul just yet. The kid had a good game in Edmonton on Saturday night, albeit against inferior competition. (Can the Oilers do anything right? If they offered to sponsor my rec hockey team I think I'd retire).
Personally I think he will be a good to great player for the Oilers but if they don't have the supporting cast to help him elevate his game to an NHL level than a year in the AHL might be the best route for him to go.
Don't think his game is creating..he's a finisher, not a creator, although as I mentioned he can turn on a dime with the puck on his stick and handle it in a phone booth…it enables him to get scoring opportunities in tight quarters. But he takes shots that not many others would think of let alone attempt. His hands are quick and he's smart.
The Oilers have some creatviity, now we need to develop some finishers and Eberle is just that…
a goal scorer IMO
Theirs a difference between a creator and a playmaker. I agree that he will be a goal scorer, but a scorer that finds open space and waits for opportunity vs one that creates the opportunity himself. ie a Heatly/Sykora/Lupul type rather then a Vclav/Nash/or even Hemsky type.
Russians are struggling in second period. Latvia is a way better team than Norway and they never give up especially against their former colonists. They seem to be exploiting what has been pointed to as the Russians weakness from the beginning – defence. This team is beatable if cda can skate with them and hammer them every chance they get. The Russians have talent to burn but they play a very choreographed stlye that physical play can throw off with disastrous results.
There's definately obvious holes on this Russian defence. I'm confident if Canada was to play a patient game they could expose them. If they end up getting into a end to end type of game it could get scary.
Nabokov looks… well he's goodm but I thought the goals were weak, especially the first one.
Holy god! Jennifer Hedger. Mmmmmmm!!!
Good Morning Nation.
I got a new Dive For Five, this one with a little optimism.
There is no reason to give up hope and sh!t on everything Oilers.
There is hope, and here is proof.
1.) Hall or Seguin ?
I gots to get back to work, I will add more optimism as the day goes on.
~WHEW!!! And here I thought we were screwed.~
Lets all give a round of applause for Norway, the Retarded twisted sister of Sweden…. Thank ya, Thank ya Very Much!!
GO CANADA…. and to Iginla, a little message even though you are originally from the Edmonton-St. Albert Area you play for my hated team the Calgary Flames….THIS MEANS WAR!!!
It's a shame they didn't wear the curling clown pants.
Womens hockey tonight against Sweden? Can we get some team photos as the ice girls of the week?
Lupul got a raw deal here. They never should have given up on him so quickly. What do have now ultimately in return? Patty O'Sullivan? Bahumbug.
Edmonton Journal is saying Khabibulin was charged with a DUI in Arizona last week.
Way to represent, West Edmonton Wall! Nicely done!
Bulin gets a DUI? WOW… the hits just keep on coming!
He got three charges. News link on Dan tencers Twitter.
I wont believe it!
Not our MVP!!!
Hopefully the team can find a way to file a complaint with the nhlpa and get out of his contract for irresponsible behaviour or something like that.
It might be in his contract, that if he is charged or anything like that might void his contract.
Wow, that would be a suprising turn for the better.
Ya. Cause I think a couple years ago, some player had it in his contract that he couldn't play Basketball in the offseason, and he played and broke his ankle or something and I think the team voided out the contract.
Anyone remember this?
Most professional athletes have clauses that prohibit them from doing activities which might increase the risk of injury (skiing, waterskiing, motorcycling etc.) unless they specifically contract an exception. Most contracts also have a morals clause that allows the owner to pull the plug in scenarios where someone is going to get jail time or something along those lines but it usually only has limited application.
For example I haven't heard what the Wizards are doing with Gilbert Arenas' issues yet. I know he has a huge contract for way too much money and they'd like to get around it if possible. If slam dunk weapons charges don't get you out of the contract then a DUI probably won't unless you run over and kill someone.
It's actually pretty sad how common place DUIs have become. If it was in AZ as reported maybe Khabby will have to do time in "tent city".
Of course I have no idea what the specific wording of Khabby's contract says. We can dare to dream though.
I hadn't thought of that, but that would be sweet. Ditch his remaining three years because of breach of contract. . . tarnishing the professional reputation of the Oilers organization, yada yada yada, you're hereby permanently suspended, have a nice life, Tambi breathes a huge sigh of relief that something finally went right.
IF . . .
such a clause exists in the contract. Otherwise, we just get to drill some more holes in his skates next season and pray that his back heals up faster than his reputation.
I'd be extremely surprised if the "morals" type clauses allow for tubing a guaranteed contract for DUI charges alone.
Not surprised. What else can happen to this team this year?
pretty sure the NHLPA would fight that idea to the bitter death. Assuming they can function long enough to do so.
Moreau broke his ankle playing a game of pick up basketball before the Playoffs in 06 I think? Didn't void his contract though.
Moreau broke his ankle during a game of basketball as PART of an Oilers off-ice training session in Arizona. Big difference.
~ Nevertheless, Moreau shouldn't have been drinking while he was participating in a training sesion. ~
2 years ago, Ryan O'Byrne and Tom Kostopoulos from the Canadiens were arrested in Florida. It was reported at the time that "the consequences could have serious implications for both players. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services could ban both players from entering the U.S. if they end up with criminal records."
So even if we ended up keeping him, the maximum he might be eligible to play could be the 42 home games and 9 Canadian road games. Assuming 1) the USA actually imposed such a ban, and 2) his contract survived such an imposition to the Club.
The thing that saved Kostopoulos and O'Byrne was that the State of Florida eventually dropped the charges against both players. I can't say for sure, but I have a hard time believing that the State of Arizona would drop DUI charges.
Dont get your hopes up people.
Relax. Robin was just giving me the gears, as witnessed by his emphasis on "MY MAN". Holy crap it gets serious here on the internets.
I'm glad you caught that part about MY MAN Deslauriers. Apparently, H and Smidsky are slow on the uptake. Probably MY FAULT for not using stupid smiley symbols (like you did).
