What was revealed today was the full roster, which was included in the story on Canucks.com from Derek Jory and it is as follows:
4 – Goaltenders: Arturs Silovs, Matthew Thiessen, Michael DiPietro & Jake Kielly.
8 – Defencemen: Brogan Rafferty, Ethan Frisch, Jett Woo, Josh Teves, Lucas Peric, Mitch Eliot, Paul DeNaples, Toni Utunen.
14 – Frowards: Adrian Elefalk, Aidan McDonough, Carson Focht, Darien Craighead, Ethan Keppen, Henry Bowlby, Jack Malone, Karel Plasek, Keegan Stevenson, Liam Finlay, Linus Karlsson, Nils Hoglander, Tyler Madden & Will Lockwood.
There are eight invites to camp and seven of the nine players drafted by the Canucks over the weekend will attend. The players that were drafted that won’t be part of the camp are Vasili Podkolzin and Arvid Costmar.
Podkolzin would’ve had to receive permission from his KHL club to attend the Canucks camp and GM Jim Benning said that it would’ve been a tight schedule to make it happen. Unsure which is it but Costmar had been battling injuries in the second half of the season, so that may be part of the reason or that simply coming from Sweden with only one day notice was not possible.
The camp lacks the same punch as previous years with players like Quinn Hughes, Elias Pettersson, and Adam Gaudette graduating to the NHL but there are still some intriguing names to follow at this year’s camp.
Quinn Hughes is not included, despite being 19 and having only 5 games with the NHL. I take this to mean that the Canucks don’t need any more assurance that he’s ready for the big show. They would rather his place be taken by a true prospect.
Some interesting names like;
Matthew Thiessen really needs to get his save % above 900. He does have 4 years at U of Maine to impress.
Toni Utunen. Up and down the u20 lineup like nobody is quite sure how good he can be including his coaches.
Will Lockwood. Still a prospect after 3(?) shoulder surgeries. Considering he is a senior at U of Michigan and a UFA next summer it looks like he wants a contract offer before school starts. Why else show up?
Linus Karlsson. Is he a real prospect or just an after thought. Maybe he would like to play in Utica.
Tyler Madden. Had an excellent freshman season with tons of upside but still listed at 152 lbs.
As I understand the NCAA players must pay their own way, flight, accommodation and living expenses. So the fact that Madden, Thiesen, and Lockwood are in the camp is a plus. Frankly, if I was Lockwood I tend to think about completing the reconstruction of his shoulder is wise
Disappointed Rathbone isn’t on the list
It has been a year since his shoulder surgery. Looked good at UMich last season.
Dhaliwal is reporting that the Canucks are not going to sign Utunen or Karlsson this year. Will let them develop in Europe for another year.
Will Lockwood. Will. Lockwood. Fingers crossed he signs at the end of the year.
Thanks for the summary. Not a lot of marquee stuff but maybe we see some big time progress. Madden has been impressing.
Pardon my lack of knowledge regarding prospect camp but I did not see Petrus Palmu’s name anywhere. Is he considered a veteran now or have they given up on him?
None of the 1st year pros from Utica last year are at development camp; Lind, Gads, Jasek.
Petrus who… nice story but doesn’t have the stuff to make the NHL or AHL
