Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau is suspended for one game

The Canucks have the day off but there was some news today in relation to their contest from last night.

Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau has been suspended for one game for a hit on Canucks defenceman Ashton Sautner

The incident occurred in the second period of the game last night and Pageau was given a two-minute penalty at the time, with the Canucks scoring on the man advantage. Vancouver went on to win the contest by a score of 7-4. Pageau has never been suspended before, so he isn’t subject to the repeat offender label that comes with stiffer penalties.

The Canucks defenceman was down for a little bit but did return to the game. Since there was no practice today, it’s unclear if he is sidelined but it unlikely that he will be.

Honestly, good to see the NHL proactive with plays like this. It was an unnecessary hit that as you can clearly see from the image in the tweet was right on the back of Sautner.  Plays like that are not needed in today’s game and at the very least it creates a precedent for the future.

The Canucks take on the Calgary Flames on Saturday night and then the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

  • Virtanen cheap shots a guy and about 80 seconds later Sautner’s in the quiet room. Skip back to the Tampa game, Roussel hits a guy dangerously and moments later Stecher is in the quiet room. Anyone see a pattern there?

  • Only problem is it’s weak. If player safety were really a concern that would be minimum 5 games. 10 should really be the standard though. If you want players to stop doing this garbage.

  • Wish they had looked at the guy who gave Sven his concussion he didn’t even get a penalty on that play and has done the same move against others. Time to watch players like that once they get away with the move they will end up doing it over and over.

  • I seem to recall the officials only handed out a 2 min boarding call ( ?? ) that being the case should there not be some punishment for the officials to. To me they seem to get away and hide under the officials discretion umbrella too often
