In the thick of their off-season and preparation for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, the Canucks have been at centre stage when it comes to eye-catching rumours.
Is Buffalo’s Ryan O’Reilly – who was once used as a comparable for Bo Horvat – a player the Canucks should target? It’s well known that management is looking to fill an immense hole at centre left by Henrik Sedin, but is O’Reilly the player to do it? J.D.’s answer might surprise you…
Carolina’s Noah Hanifin is not far off from his 5th-overall pedigree at the 2015 NHL Draft. It was first reported by Elliotte Friedman that the Canucks are a “dark horse” in competition for his services, prompting many to speculate whether Jim Benning would go so far as trading the upcoming 7th overall pick for the Boston native.
You can hear J.D. discuss these topics and more with Sekeres and Price (begins at 6:30):

Sutter to Anaheim, Anaheim late first rounder to Buffalo, Tanev and Goldobin to Buffalo, O’Reilly to Van.
That’s too much. A first round pick, a good prospect and a top 4 d man (albeit oft injured) for a second line centre?
Yep. Another ridiculous undervaluation of Tanev.
Wow, I just listened to the podcast. JD goes over Sutter’s stats for the past season. They were all bad, dangerous shots etc. Then said the only thing he did well was ACTUAL goal results, you know that horrid +/- stat. We all know you win games by out advanced stating team. Scoring one way or the other doesn’t matter.
LOL the stupidity from this guy you cant script it!
Hard to say that overall Sutter had a good season, but he finished very strongly which JD seemed to ignore completely. Sutter could be a very valuable chip next trade deadline if he starts next season the way he finished last. His value may be too low right now to trade, but I’d listen to offers.
The path for the Canucks to acquire these players seems to be in a 3 way trade, direct or indirectly. Trade Sutter and flip the return + for O’Reilly. Trade Tanev, flip the return + for Hanifin.
Keep 7th overall and top prospects. Throw in pieces like Baertschi, Grandlund, Goaltender, Hutton, Boucher, or maybe a mid round pick (that can be recouped at the deadline)
This would make the team younger and better (except losing Sven). No important pieces for a rebuild would be sacrificed.
….and I thought his writing was bad…..
You seriously have to wonder about his infatuation with Sutter…..
