Blackfish: CanucksArmy Prospect Report – March 22nd, 2018

Playoffs are in full swing in Europe and kick off this week in the CHL. It’s exciting times as the stakes ramp up with each passing game.

A prospect was informed that he will not be signed, while another gets ready for the NCAA regionals and then maybe an NHL contract?

The season is winding down for the Canucks, but that doesn’t mean it stops in the prospect world.

All that and more in this week’s BlackFish Prospect Report!

All the images of stats are from Elite Prospects.

CANADIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

Western Hockey League

  • Kole Lind sat out the Friday night game against Vancouver (along with many other veterans) but closed out the WHL regular season with 1 goal and 1 assist in their Saturday night contest. Kelowna will face the Tri-City Americans in the first round with their series kicking off tonight.

Ontario Hockey League

  • Matt Brassard closed out the 2017-18 season with one goal and one assist in one game since last Thursday. Brassard was named the Oshawa Defenceman of the Year earlier today. The Generals will face Niagara in the first round of the OHL playoffs, with game 1 going tomorrow night.

  • Brett McKenzie had two goals over the final two games for Owen Sound. He has slid into the second line spot and been effective there as a two-way centre who can chip in here and there.
  • Gadjovich had himself a decent close to the season – picking up one goal and four assists in those two games. Owen Sound faces London in the first round – game one is tonight.

  • Cole Candella closed out the 2017-18 season with one assist in three games. Sudbury failed to make the playoffs and at this moment, there is no definitive information on what the Canucks plan to do prior to the June 1 deadline.

  • Michael DiPietro was 1-1-0 over the past seven days. Windsor will face Sarnia in the first round.

NCAA

  • Adam Gaudette played in one game over the past seven days that saw him put up one assist. The aforementioned game was an overtime loss to Providence in the Hockey East Semi-Finals. Northeastern drew Michigan in the NCAA regionals and it’s lose and you are out from here. So, his season could be done tomorrow.
  • William Lockwood’s season is done due to injury.

USHS

  • Jack Rathbone still sits at 11 goals and 19 assists in 17 games – based on everything I can find, it appears their season is done.

EUROPE

Sweden

  • Elias Pettersson was held off the scoresheet in both playoff games this week – Brynas and Vaxjo start at 11am today with game three of their best of seven series. (Series is tied 1-1)
  • Kristoffer Gunnarsson was held off the scoresheet in both Frolunda playoff games this past week – their series with Malmo is tied 1-1

  • Jonathan Dahlen did not play any games this past week – their series against Karlskrona on March 25th

Finland

  • Petrus Palmu was held off the scoresheet in game – but they play game two this morning (starting at 9:30am)
  • Olli Juolevi scored the first goal of the playoffs for TPS – they eventually fell behind 3-1 but stormed back to win 4-3 in OT. Juolevi played 27:00 minutes in game one, due in large part to Henrik Tallinder getting a 10-minute misconduct on the first shift.

Russia

  • Nikita Tryamkin was held off the scoresheet in Avtomobilist 6 game series loss to Metallurg.
  • Zhukenov appears to be in the MHL still –  he has 10 goals and 24 assists in 33 games but did not play any games over the past 7 days

Czech Republic

  • Lukas Jasek appeared in four playoff games over the past week but was held off the scoresheet. They play Mountfield Hk at 9:20 AM PT this morning with the series at 2-2 (prior to today’s game)

AHL

  • Reid Boucher, Nikolay Goldobin and Tyler Motte remain with the Canucks.
  • Tanner McMaster and Vincent Arseneau were signed to PTO’s over the past week
  • If you are looking for in-depth post-game reports about each Comets game – go to Cory Hergott’s author page here.

ECHL

  • MacKenze Stewart had one assist over Kalamazoo’s two games this past week.
  • Anton Cederholm did not appear in any games.

  • WiseCanuck

Guys i won’t lie, my alarm bells are ringing again over 161lb Petterssen and so should YOURS. Now, we all know Elias ‘no shoulders’ went awol in the WJC’s whilst Middlestadt tore it up and yet again when it matters – he gets shutdown in the playoffs ffs…

Face the facts pompom wavers, when we needed an NHL ready impact player Benning drafted the bust Juolevi and when we needed an elite centre who delivers on the big stage he drafted a stringbean winger (Petterssen) instead of a centreman beast like Casey Middlestadt or Cody Glass.

Smell the coffee rubbernecks, elite NHL ready centremen and D win cups, ask Pittsburgh eh!…

    • Canuck70

Sure, not-so-wisecanuck. Let’s slag our best young prospect before he has played a single NHL minute. Talk about negative media! You are as bad as any of the worst sports media that I have ever heard. You are not a Canuck fan. You express the same negativity that Tony Gallagher and other Van media used to spout. You are sick. Please return to your basement closet and troll some other organization. Calgary is hurting right now after seeing their playoff hopes slipping away. Perhaps you could pick on a few Calgary or even Edmonton fans and kick them in the teeth while you are at it. Hmm…..I am a lifelong Canuck fan but I currently live in Calgary….why don’t you stop by? I’ll be happy to dispense some western Canadian manners your way. Elias cannot defend himself against filth like you but i will call you out! You are an Internet bully. You hide behind your computer, you coward!

      • Fred-65

If there’s one management theme to the Canucks for the last 4 years is …fans just be patient …be patient. At what point does being patient become a con game for incompetence

    • Kootenaydude

So tell me. Have you been watching the games to come up with these expert opinions or just a negative troll?! Did you watch Pettersson in his playoff games? Did you watch Juolevi play his last game. How many games did you watch Mittelstadt play this month? I bet you haven’t watched any of these guys play once in the last month.

      • Fred-65

One point to Pettersson style and in fact Gaudette too, is a tweet suggesting that the reason Pettersson has only 1 secondary assit and same for Gaudette ( N’Eastern were knocked out but only scrape in by a selection committee ) …is the opposition were playing them “Hard” Basically both were taken out of the game …. That’s the way it is for every game in the NHL. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed, it’s not a given

        • WiseCanuck

Exactly fred, these clueless muppets think a good season in sub standard Sweden playing as a winger with bigger ice and no physicality translates to being an elite centre in the NHL… the Pacific powerhouses will shut this wimp down and throw him around like a ragdoll i assure you. WHERE is the elite CENTRE????

    • TD

Listened to Beich speak about Pettersson on 650 this morning. He said this was a good learning experience as he was being shadowed and having to learn how to shake off the shadow or work through it. Apparently Pettersson had some good chances but the goalie made saves.

    • DogBreath

And if they’d picked Glass and he went two games without a playoff goal you’d be pointing to what a bad pick the Canucks had made, when Pettersson was ripping up the SHL. Drafting is imperfect. No one has a perfect draft record. The problem isn’t the players (or the picks). It’s you and people like you who operate in 20:20 hindsight and rip people who make tough decisions.

  • Burnabybob

It would be nice to see Gaudette in a Canuck uniform before season’s end. If Pettersson is a more natural winger, hopefully Gaudette can eventually play second line center with either Boeser or Pettersson on his right side.

    • TD

I would love to see a kids line next year with Gaudette between Pettersson and Dahlen. It would be fun and give hope, but I can see wanting to protect them (not sure if they have the personnel to properly protect them all).

  • Now that the regular seasons for these players have wrapped up, could we get an article about their likelihood of success by pGPS etc?

I know Petterson will be off the charts, but I’m very curious to see how Lind, Gadjovich, Palmu and Dahlen are projecting after the seasons they’ve had.

I’m guessing these numbers will be part of the prospect profiles, but we’re not going to get to the top five on those until August or September at the rate they’ve been coming out…

    • Giant-Nation

Pettersson playing his first playoff hockey against men and already he is shadowed. This is fantastic news, cause why shadow a crappy player. Really happy with Pettersson we really lucked out drafting a kid with such potential, he looks to be the steal of the top five picks and Patrick was #1 for so long?! I think Pettersson will prove to be an elite passer with great shot in the NHL. Great job Jimbo, it’s hard for me to put into words how good this pick is Vancouver, and then Jimbo trades for Dalen the kid he ripped it up with last year. It’s hard for me to contain my excitement as it appears we have drafted a top 5 centre in the NHL… hats off to Linden and Benning for picking this gem when everyone was fixated on Hiersher and Patrick plus others. Pettersson = Steal of the draft, dripping with skill.
