Not a good night, was this?
Cory Schneider came in, and the team showed some promise early, out-shooting Los Angeles 11-5 in the first period and bringing it to 24-11 through two. The team kept LA to a minimal amount of scoring chances in the early going, but on the inverse, many of their efforts were calm attempts from out-side the perimeter. LA broke through in the third on a goal by Dustin Brown. We know this, so do the Canucks, and, for the first time since 2001, the Canucks will head into the fourth game of a series down 3 games to 0.
What’s there to go over? We have a few numbers and bullet points in the next few hundred words, as usual. Since it’s a tough loss, we won’t keep you for very long past the jump.
-9-13 the scoring chances in this one, in LA’s favour. 8-11 at even strength and 4-10 with the score tied at 5-on-5. A lot of the Canucks’ game, generating rebounds, creating chances off of blocked shots and the like. Jonathan Quick, as he has all series, kept those rebounds away, and the Kings’ defence just cleared those rebounds away with unimpressive efficiency, creating little in the way of scoring chances for Vancouver.
-You need a slip-up from Quick, any, to have a chance. This was the case when Vancouver ran into Tim Thomas last season, but it just isn’t there.
-Dustin Brown had an incredible game. Creating chances, involved in chances, being a physical force you know the Canucks wanted to acquire. Of his six shots, five of them were scoring chances. Not a player that involved in this series from the Canucks’ standpoint. Very scary moment when he hit Henrik Sedin, whose head snapped back pretty hard when he fell on the ice, but he wasn’t sent to the Quiet Room. In the post-game, he called the hit “clean”, which it was, and that he was only winded on the play.
-The prospect of losing both Sedins to concussions was near. Related: Dale Weise played 1:54 of completely uneventful hockey.
-Cory Schneider did his job, getting the quality start, but I’m not quite sure he was the best player on this night. Kevin Bieksa, actually, played just over 25 minutes, had a plus chance count, six shots on net and was effective on the penalty kill. He led the Canucks in Corsi at a +23, though much of that came in garbage time when the Canucks really poured it on.
-That said, Schneider was good. I think you bring him back out for Game Four. I like both him and Roberto Luongo in any game, but you can’t waffle in the wind now. I’m sure that Alain Vigneault will announce his name on Tuesday when he makes the decision.
-That chance at 5:02 to go in the third was the Canucks’ season in a nut-shell. Mason Raymond makes a great play in the offensive zone, making moves around defenders, bringing it in front to a very good spot, and throwing a pretty weak attempt on net. The Canucks have accomplished very little with all the time they’ve spent in the offensive zone.
-Rough game for the Chris Tanev-Keith Ballard pairing, against no significant matchup. Gotta think the Canucks bring Aaron Rome in for the fourth game. How he’ll fix the offence, I don’t know.
-Ryan Kesler has to stop that. So does Maxim Lapierre.

@kim
if he played for the canucks i bet you would be wearing his jersey, lol
I’m cheering for Los Angeles in this series (used to live in LA) and am happy with the result. But in all fairness, Vancouver should have won this game.
Willie Mitchell must be the strongest man on skates the way his nudge sent kessler flying. Also, seeing sedin get filled in was great. Time for a rebuild, vancouver, blow it up.
Time for a rebuild? This team just won it’s second straight President’s Trophy!
Are hockey fans really so stupid as to think that every time your team suffers a setback that it is time to blow the entire thing up?
The lemmings come here too?
Ron McLean called out Martinez for a head snap and Brown for a dive. Simpson laughed at WIlliams for his dive. Williams also dove on the Pahlsson penalty. Brown dropping to the ice so he didn’t have to fight was also noted. That’s two tomahawks for Doughty in two games now.
Vancouver was again the better overall team. Sometimes a small sample and a red hot player on the other team is anyone’s undoing in the small 7 game series sample.
Vancouver doesn’t blow things up or rebuild, that’s an exclusively Alberta thing. They’ll only reload.
Hate how it turns out all the Kings needed to ‘be good’ this year was Jeff Carter and biased officiating. Without a doubt they are the most unfairly placed 8th seed team in a long time.
I cant watch this team go through another game like this, so instead I’m going to start daydreaming about how sweet a return we can get for Schnieder from Yzerman come this offseason
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! This is awesome!!!! Who knew that building a team around two Euro sweethearts, two rats, and an arrogant (not quite sure why) American, wouldnt work out. Not made for real hockey, maybe preseason. If and when the final nail comes on Tuesday I’ll be staying tuned for the riots. 41 years and counting…..
Yes, this team that made it to within one game of winning the Cup is clearly not made for playoff hockey.
The Canucks are a GREAT regular season team. That is all.
Last year they seriously struggled with real playoff teams. Beating Nashville and San Jose are not major accomplishments. The real story was how they came within inches of blowing a 3-0 lead against Chicago and getting dominated by Boston.
And Vancouver “backed in” this year. Good luck winning 4 straight against LA. 🙂
Backed in? 8-1 to finish the season is backing in, best player sidelined by a cheap shot or not.
Please note the “backed in” was in quotation marks.
You can’t hang your hopes on one player. If losing Daniel means that you won’t win the Stanley Cup then I suggest you have a core team problem. No doubt he is one of your most valuable but you have to be able to mitigate those losses.
Any chance you can do a piece about the fact that Kesler does not pass the bloody puck? I am not sure if anybody noticed Higgins giving an earful to Kesler during the third period as a result of his selfish play.
Glad you agree…just another one of those teams that got close but has never won anything of importance. Do they choke in the big games, or do they just not have the toughness. I see sweeping changes with an organization that cant win. I mean they’ve had 41 years….its kinda sad really.
You sound like a jerk. I bet your mom is real proud of you.
Does the absence of one sedin make such a big difference to the canuck’s success? I thought the ‘nucks were the deepest team in the west.
As far as presidents trophys are concerned, they don’t mean much if they are followed by playoff failure. Encouragingly, the Islanders in the late ’70s led the regular season point totals before disappointing in the playoffs. It took one addition[Butch Goring] to push them over the top into a dynasty. This could happen next year if the right player is targeted in van. Any thoughts who that player might be? Iginla maybe?
LOL Iginla. For what?
The big lacking, that I see, on the Canucks is a Dustin Brown, Jarome Iginla (circa 2004), Milan Lucic, or Dave Bolland. Someone to lead a la Mark Messier. I’m not sure how you quantify that but there is a significant lack of it.
Statistical Goats are 2 of Gillis’s great trades.
Seems to be the running theme. Players he brought in these year have bombed in the playoffs.
Great move Gillis. Your time in Vancouver is up.
