Dustin Byfgulien is Large and In trouble

According to a police report found by Darren Wolfson, Dustin Byfuglien was arrested last night in Hennepin county, Minnesota for operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol (BWI).

The report is disturbing for a number of reasons. According to Wolfson, Byfuglien refused the breath test (implying guilt), but also weighed in at a staggering 286 pounds. That’s more than 40 pounds heavier than his playing weight from last season. So not only is the big guy facing potentially significant legal issues heading into the new season, but he is apparently grossly out of shape. Byfuglien’s size has mostly been a boon for the winger/defender in the NHL, but there comes a point where pure girth is no longer beneficial.

More as things unfold.

The last thing I think anybody wanted was for the Winnipeg honeymoon to come to a crashing halt because of the irresponsible and shortsighted actions of a single player. The fans in Winnipeg already love every one of those players before any of them have even set a skate boot to the ice. If Byfuglien spends time serving a sentence or paying a fine and shows up grossly overweight I think fans there would have a right to feel insulted.

That being said, why was Byfuglien’s weight being released in an arrest notification? I have to wonder about the motives for the original source when I read about these cases. Too often when the person involved has a public profile it seems to act as an incentive for someone to release any kind of detail about the incident that could be inflammatory.

On a positive note, though, at least Byfuglien is a full 49 lbs lighter than Albert Haynesworth.
