Scott Arniel: AHL Coach of the Year

arniel

Manitoba Moose head coach Scott Arniel has been named the AHL Coach of the Year. For the third straight season, Arniel has put up incredible numbers in Manitoba. Here’s the team’s record in Arniel’s time in charge:

  • 2008-09: 49 – 22 – 6
  • 2007-08: 46 – 27 – 6
  • 2006-07: 45 – 23 – 12
  • Total: 140 – 77 – 24

Those are pretty incredible numbers. Arniel played 730 games in the NHL, mostly with Buffalo and Winnipeg before ending his career with three seasons as a winger with the Manitoba Moose. When he retired he joined the team as an assistant, and was an assistant coach with the Buffalo Sabres from 2002-2006 before returning to take the head coaching job.

Previous winners of the award include Scott Gordon, Bruce Cassidy, Peter Laviolette, Robbie Ftorek, Barry Trotz and Marc Crawford.

I very much doubt that Arniel has a lot of time left in the AHL; he’s one of the most qualified minor league coaches out there and it would not surprise me in the slightest if he were considered for an NHL job this summer.

Any chance he goes to Edmonton Willis? I hear you guys need a coach. HA

It isn't that farfetched – Steve Tambellini would presumably have some kind of relationship with the guy, and he is technically our GM.

Arniel would definitely be on my shortlist if I was making the decision.

    @ Sedinz:

MacTavish seems to be the consensus choice, but there's plenty of blame to go around and people seem to feel pretty free to spread it.

Personally, I think Lowe/Tambellini are the biggest problems, but some of MacTavish's moves didn't help matters.

I don't know we can blame Tambellini yet. Not many trades happen in todays NHL and he got decent return on Garon/Cole. But MacT definitely didnt like the cards he was dealt…

Anyways, yes Arniel would be a good coaching candidate
