The Vancouver Canucks were one of the biggest winners on the first day of 2010 Free Agency. Not because they landed the biggest free agents. They filled two very specific needs and did so overall for reasonable money.
With the signings of Dan Hamhuis, Manny Malhotra, Jeff Tambellini, and Joel Perrault, as well as the trade acquisitions of Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich, the Canucks management have visibly improved their team and filled known gaps in their lineup.
But the question now is: "What are the next steps for the Vancouver Canucks?"

If today was Christmas, then Santa Claus gave us some pretty kick-ass presents!
July 1st was a very busy for Canucks management. It was probably their busiest day ever, signing available free agents to replace exiting players and fill needs on the lienup exposed throughout last season and the playoffs.
GM Mike Gillis had a game plan, and he executed to a tee.

For the Canucks fans the wait is over as they welcome home B.C. boy Dan Hamhuis, to a reported 6 year deal for $4.5million per year. Last season he scored 5 goals and 19 assists for the Predators. The 6ft 1", 203lb, 27 year old was coveted by many teams.

What will the Canucks get in their stockings this year? A top 4 D? A 3rd line C?
Trade Deadline day has lost its punch. Under the new CBA, given the way contracts are escalating, it's harder and harder to pull of a blockbuster deal on the last day of trading in the NHL season.
The real blockbusters happen on July 1st - the first day of Free Agency. Otherwise known as Christmas in July.
So what will Canucks fans get for Christmas this year?

Keith Ballard will spend the next 3 years keeping pucks out of Vancouver's net, rather than scoring on them. Oh and Roberto - keep your head up, son.
The 2010 NHL Entry Draft has come and gone now and the Vancouver Canucks made arguably the biggest draft day move in acquiring Keith Ballard from the Florida Panthers.
