Dale Weise is in a festive mood, and why shouldn't he be? Christmas is just around the corner!
If there were ever a "trap game" (or "look-ahead game", as some of you may know it) it would be this one. Sunday evening's tilt against the Winnipeg Jets has the perfect medley of things going for it to ensure that a bad performance would be followed up with talk that their heads weren't in it, and that they weren't in the right frame of mind.
The Vancouver Canucks are coming off of an impressive victory against a bitter rival. They then had the weekend off (spending Friday night in Chicago, and almost assuredly keeping the good times going Saturday night on Granville Street). Now they play against a team that's well below them in the standings, and as soon as they're done, they have 6 days off for the Holidays.
But hold on a second. While all of that is true they're still all professional athletes, and they're facing a squad in the Winnipeg Jets that quite frankly is not very good at hockey. Given how tight the Western Conference playoff picture is, using that as an excuse surely wouldn't fly with John Tortorella..

Eddie Lack was impressive, and the difference for the Canucks [Image via Bruce Bennett]
Ho boy.. that was fun, wasn't it? After two rather unrefined showings against the Wild and Stars, we were treated to an exhilarating affair on Friday night at the
Madhouse Sadhouse on Madison. It shouldn't come as a surprise, though, because seemingly every time these two teams go up against each other, notable things happen. And this game was no different.
In the preamble of the preview I specifically pointed out that while things looked bleak for the Canucks, we shouldn't necessarily count them out since they play these games for a reason. Just like that time in St.Louis at the end of a long roadtrip they showed some impressive resiliency and fight in battling against an opponent that theoretically should have had the upper hand. I guess you could say it was gutsy, but I certainly won't.
The result was a 3-2 shootout win, which I'll recap just past the jump..

At the start of the season, I presumed that the Canucks might have three of four prospects at Team Canada's selection camp this season for the World Juniors, with most recent first round picks Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk, as well as last year's first rounder Brendan Gaunce. Maybe there was a spot somewhere for Belleville's Jordan Subban.
Ultimately though, Hockey Canada decided to go with a 25-man camp this year, cutting Gaunce and Subban before it began. Bo Horvat was a lock all through the camp, but Shinkaruk, who has been nursing a hagging hip injury this year and had just 16 points so far in 18 games, was one of the first cuts from the camp, along with New Jersey prospect Damon Severson.

Eddie Lack used to enjoy being in Chicago. This'll be a different experience, you'd imagine.
The title for last night's game recap was "It Gets Easier, Right", and it turns out that the answer is a definitive "no". The score from that game is actually misleading, seeing as the Canucks completely and utterly dominated the entire 2nd period of a game in which they were only down 2-1. But a soft back-breaking goal by Cole late in the 2nd really did them in.
Less than 24 hours following the loss they're back at it, this time against the Chicago Blackhawks and their usual gimmicks; Jim Cornelison's extravagant anthem, Chelsea Dagger, Vince Vaughn, and some very good hockey players. It's far from an ideal situation for the Canucks given all of the circumstances, but there's a reason they play the games. Remember that time they were supposed to get slaughtered by the Blues at the end of their 7-game road trip? Yeah..

With any luck, this awful pun will land me a job running the @VanCanucks Twitter account.
After their biggest win of the season at home, the Canucks are on the road this week where they've been good all year, culminating in a showdown with the Blackhawks at the Mad House.
Here are 10 thoughts for the week, and since this is my last entry before Christmas, I hope everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season. Here we go!
